Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Treachery

Within three hours, the Romano estate transformed into a military command center.

Dante sat behind his desk, his eyes bloodshot, sleeves rolled to his elbows. Maps of the greater Midwest were pinned across the oak paneling. Six laptop screens hummed with traffic camera feeds, bank surveillance, and license plate recognition algorithms. Twenty armed men patrolled the perimeter.

Marco walked into the room, tossing a dark leather folder onto the desk.

"Her passport wasn't flagged at O'Hare or Midway," Marco said grimly. "Her credit cards haven't been swiped. No withdrawals from her personal accounts. She walked out into the rain with whatever she could carry on her back."

"A woman seven months pregnant cannot simply vanish into thin air, Marco!" Dante slammed his fist on the desk, rattling the crystal decanters. "Find the driver who picked her up! Squeeze every cab company in the tri-state area!"

"There’s something else, Boss," Marco said, his voice dropping an octave. He nodded toward the folder. "We checked the security system in your private library. Emma accessed your safe three nights ago."

Dante looked up, a scowl deepening on his brow. "What did she take?"

"She didn't take anything," Marco said. "She copied a file. But it wasn't your file, Dante. It was placed there by Bianca Russo."

Dante opened the folder. Inside were encrypted bank statements, offshore wire transfers, and a legal agreement drafted by a syndicate lawyer based out of Miami. As Dante read the lines, the blood drained entirely from his face.

The documents outlined a massive financial takeover of the Romano shipping hubs. But worse, nestled among the financial filings was an intercepted communique between Bianca Russo and Enzo Moretti—the head of the rival Moretti crime family.

*Dante’s marriage is fractured,* one message read. *The wife suspects nothing. Once the ports are transferred to my trust, Moretti supplies will move through Chicago unimpeded. The unborn child is an inconvenience; I will ensure Dante disowns the claim.*

A terrifying ringing started in Dante’s ears.

Emma had not left because of the slap alone. She had found these documents. She believed Dante was actively conspiring to strip her and their child of everything, handing their legacy to Bianca.

And then, at dinner, when Bianca pushed her and Emma fought back, Dante had struck her down. In Emma’s eyes, Dante was not merely an unfaithful husband; he was an executioner orchestrating her destruction.

Before Dante could speak, the double doors of the study swung open.

Bianca strolled in, draped in a lavender cashmere coat, a designer handbag dangling from her arm. Her left cheek bore a faint foundation cover-up over where Emma had slapped her, but her eyes held a victorious gleam.

"Dante, darling," she purred, walking toward the desk. "I heard the ridiculous commotion. Has the hysterical girl finally taken her little tantrum out of the house?"

Dante slowly rose to his feet.

Marco immediately stepped backward toward the door, his eyes dropping to the floor, recognizing the lethal shift in the room's pressure.

"Come here, Bianca," Dante said. His voice was terrifyingly soft, drained of all fury, replaced by a cold, abyssal stillness.

Bianca smiled, gliding around the desk. "I told you she was unstable, Dante. A woman from her background could never handle the weight of your crown. Now we can finally—"

Dante’s hand shot out like an iron clamp, closing around Bianca’s throat.

Her breath caught in a strangled gasp as he lifted her slightly off her feet, backing her against the heavy mahogany bookcase. Books tumbled around them. Her designer purse dropped to the carpet.

"D-Dante..." she choked out, her fingers clawing desperately at his iron grip.

With his free hand, Dante held up the Moretti communique inches from her bulging eyes.

"You used my home," Dante whispered, his face inches from hers, his dark eyes void of humanity. "You insulted my wife. You touched the mother of my child. And you sold my bloodline to Enzo Moretti."

Bianca’s eyes dilated with pure, unadulterated terror. The delicate socialite vanished; all that remained was a cornered rat.

"Marco," Dante said, not breaking eye contact with Bianca.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Take her to the lower cellars. Do not let her die until she gives us every single contact, every bank account, and every safe house the Morettis own in this city. Then call her father and tell him his daughter's life is forfeit."

Dante shoved her to the floor. Bianca collapsed, gasping for air, weeping hysterically.

"Dante, please! I did it for you! I loved you!" she shrieked as two guards dragged her across the rug.

Dante didn't look at her. He turned back to the window, staring out into the gray Chicago morning. He reached into his pocket and squeezed Emma’s wedding band until the platinum edges bit deep into his flesh, drawing blood.

"Find my wife," he whispered to the empty room. "Even if I have to burn this entire world to ash... find her."
