Chapter 5 - Debt of Silence

Damon closed the door and walked to the edge of the bed. He pulled the chair Eleanor had vacated closer, sitting down so his eyes were level with hers.
"How is the pain?" he asked.
"Manageable," Kate replied. "The cast... Dr. Reyes did an incredible job."
"He is the best orthopedic surgeon in the private sector," Damon said casually. "He works exclusively on our payroll."
He pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and laid it on the silk blanket beside her good hand.
Kate looked down at it. It was an official receipt from Saint Vincent’s Medical Center.
*Account Balance: Clara Bennett.*
*Prior Balance: $71,410.00.*
*Payment Received: $71,410.00 (Wire Transfer - Blackwell Holdings).*
*Prepaid Medical Escrow for Next 12 Months: $250,000.00.*
*Current Balance Due: $0.00.*
Tears welled in Kate's eyes, blurring the printed numbers. She stared at the receipt, her chest heaving as months of suffocating, soul-crushing terror evaporated off her shoulders in a single instant.
"I can't pay you back for this," she choked out, pressing her left hand against her mouth to stifle a sob. "I could work for you for twenty years and never repay this."
"You don't owe me a single cent," Damon said, his voice dropping into that deep, resolute baritone. "This was not a loan, Kate. This was a correction. You were injured under my roof, wearing my family’s crest. It is my duty to provide for you."
"And Preston?" Kate whispered, lowering her hand. "What did you do to him?"
Damon didn't flinch. "He and his associates are currently reflecting on their behavior in a private facility near the harbor."
"Damon... they’re fifteen men. High-profile men. Sons of politicians, state troopers, brokers. People will notice they’re gone. The city will tear itself apart looking for them."
A faint, humorless smirk appeared on Damon’s lips. "Do you think I took them off the street like a common thug, Kate? Every step was planned. By morning, Julian Vance’s passport will register an entry into Grand Cayman. Garrett Cole’s phone will ping off cell towers in Bogota. The two state troopers’ bank accounts have already received substantial anonymous transfers, followed by resignation letters submitted via their official emails."
Kate stared at him, cold realization washing over her. "You framed them to look like they ran away."
"I gave them a narrative that the public will readily believe," Damon replied coldly. "Corrupt, entitled young men caught in an insider-trading scandal fleeing the country before the subpoenas drop. The media will chase ghosts across South America for the next three years."
"And where are they really?"
Damon leaned forward, his hands resting on his knees. His gaze was piercing, unwavering, daring her to look away.
"In a place where they will never lay a hand on another woman as long as they draw breath," he said quietly. "Do you want to see them?"
Kate felt a chill course through her blood. "What?"
"You have the right," Damon said. "You were the one they hurt. If you want to see Preston Caldwell brought to his knees, I will take you there right now. If you want him gone completely, say the word, and it will be done before the sun clears the tree line."
Kate looked at the dark, powerful man sitting before her. He was offering her vengeance on a silver platter. He was offering her the absolute authority of a mob sovereign.
"I don't want to see him," she whispered after a long pause. "I just... I want him to know that he couldn't break me."
Damon reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was electric, a sudden shock of warmth that made her breath hitch.

"He knows," Damon murmured. "He knows very well."
