Chapter 10 - The Sovereign’s Queen

Six months later.

The spring gala at the Blackwell estate was an entirely different affair.

The three hundred guests who filled the grand ballroom were subdued, polite, their voices hushed beneath the glittering chandeliers. They moved with a newfound reverence, acutely aware of the invisible boundaries that governed this house. The sudden fall of the Caldwell dynasty had taught the city a lesson that would echo through the next generation: *The Blackwells do not forgive trespass.*

On the second-floor mezzanine, overlooking the sea of velvet, tuxedos, and crystal, Kate stood at the polished balustrade.

Her right arm was bare, completely healed, showing only a faint, pale line along the inner forearm where Dr. Reyes had made a tiny surgical incision to insert a titanium stabilization pin.

She wore a gown of midnight blue silk that fell like liquid water to the marble floor, secured at the shoulder with a platinum raven brooch crusted in black diamonds—the ancient seal of the Blackwell family.

A low, familiar step sounded behind her.

Damon walked up to the balustrade, immaculate in a black tuxedo, a glass of champagne in his hand. He didn't look down at the crowd below. He looked only at her.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

Kate looked out over the ballroom. Six months ago, she had been a shadow in a starched white apron, terrified of being seen, biting down on her own tongue so her cries of pain wouldn't disturb these very people. She had believed she was nothing—a replaceable cog in a machine of extreme wealth.

Now, as she looked down, she saw Senatorial candidates and corporate titans glancing up at the mezzanine with nervous, respectful glances, waiting for permission to approach.

She turned to Damon.

He was the monster of the city, a man who had made fifteen powerful predators disappear into the frozen permafrost of Russia without leaving a trace of blood on his carpets.

Yet when he looked at her, his eyes held nothing but profound, unshakeable devotion.

"I am ready," Kate said, her voice clear, steady, and sovereign.

She reached out and took his arm.

Together, Damon and Kate descended the grand marble staircase, side by side, into the light.
