Chapter 5 - Ledger of Blood and Greed

Back on the main floor, the warmth of the small kitchen provided a brief sanctuary from the storm gathering outside. I put a vintage enamel kettle on the stove, listening to the gentle hiss of heating water while Emily sat at the breakfast table, cradling a mug between her hands. Michael was upstairs, quietly packing a suitcase.

"Claire," Emily said softly, looking up at me.

"Yes, Emily?"

"Why did you do it?" she asked. "Vanessa was going to fire you. She probably would have blackmailed you or made sure you never worked in Chicago again. You barely knew me."

I turned off the flame as the kettle began to whistle, pouring the hot water over a chamomile tea bag. I brought the mug over and sat across from her.

"My father was a carpenter," I told her, my voice quiet. "He was a good man who worked until his hands bled. When he died four years ago, the mortgage company tried to foreclose on our house while my mother was still in shock from his funeral. They told her she was a nobody, that she had no leverage, and that she should just take a few thousand dollars and move into a shelter."

Emily watched me intently.

"A woman from our church came down to the bank," I continued. "She wasn't a lawyer. She was just an elderly neighbor who knew the law better than they thought. She stood in front of the loan officer's desk and refused to leave until they honored my father's insurance policy. She saved my mother’s home. She saved our dignity."

I reached across the table and placed my hand over Emily’s. "When I saw Vanessa standing at that service entrance, treating you like a piece of trash to be thrown in an alley while you carried your baby... I saw those bankers. I saw people who think that because they have money and power, they can steal what belongs to someone else. I couldn't walk away from that. Not even for a paycheck."

Emily’s eyes shimmered. "You’re family now, Claire. As far as I'm concerned, you're family."

Before I could answer, the front door opened, and Luca stepped inside, followed by Marco. The air that clung to Luca was cold, carrying the sharp scent of winter and gunpowder. He had discarded his suit jacket, now wearing a heavy black woolen trench coat over his unbuttoned collar.

"Michael packed?" Luca asked.

"Yes, sir," Michael said, coming down the stairs carrying two duffel bags.

"Good. The transport is waiting. We move now."

"What about Vanessa?" Emily asked, standing up carefully.

Luca’s expression darkened. "Marco’s team decrypted her phone while we were in the basement. She wasn't just working for her father. She had an encrypted messaging channel with an operative named Salvi. Twenty minutes ago, before Marco jammed the estate's communications, she sent a message: *'Luca knows. Emily is at Maple Street. Secure the basement now, by any means necessary.'*"

Michael stiffened. "They're coming here?"

"They were already dispatched," Luca said, checking the magazine of a matte-black pistol before sliding it back into his shoulder holster. "They expect to find an unarmed girl and a schoolteacher. Instead, they are going to find thirty of my best soldiers waiting in the perimeter shadows."

"Dad, don't stay here," Emily begged, stepping toward him and taking his arm. "Let the police handle it—"

"The police cannot touch Gianni Bellini, sweetheart," Luca said gently, kissing her forehead. "The police don't possess the ledgers. I do. This war ends tonight, on my terms. Marco will escort you, Michael, and Claire to the estate. The mansion is a fortress; nothing can breach the inner perimeter. I will join you before dawn."

"Please be careful," Emily whispered.

Luca looked down at her swollen stomach, a fierce, tender warmth softening his features. "I have a grandson to meet in three months, Emily. Nothing in this world is going to keep me from holding him."

He looked at Michael. "Keep her safe."

"With my life, Luca," Michael answered without hesitation.

Luca nodded, satisfied. Then he turned to me. "Claire. Take care of my daughter."

"I will, Mr. Moretti."

As Marco ushered us out the back door toward the waiting armored SUV, I glanced back one last time through the kitchen window. Luca Moretti was standing in the center of the dark living room, a ghost of vengeance waiting in the quiet sanctuary of the woman he had loved, ready to settle a debt thirty years in the making.
