Chapter 4 - The Relic in the Floorboards

The basement stairs creaked under our weight as we descended into the cool, subterranean air. Unlike the luxurious wine cellars of Luca’s lakeside estate, this was an old Midwestern basement—poured concrete walls, exposed wooden rafters overhead, and the steady, low hum of a water heater.

In the far corner, tucked beneath the staircase where the shadows congregated, stood a heavy, iron-reinforced oak cabinet. It stood nearly six feet tall, dark as mahogany, bound with rusted steel brackets and secured by a heavy brass padlock that bore the initials *S.M.*

"They tried to force it," Michael pointed out, shining his phone light on the hasp.

Sure enough, deep scrape marks scored the wood around the lock. Someone had wedged a pry bar into the seam, but the reinforced oak had held firm, refusing to yield its secrets to brute force.

"Sofia had this safe custom-built in Milan before we bought the house," Luca said, stepping forward. He touched the gouged wood with reverent anger. "The lock isn't mechanical. It’s a dual-chamber cylinder. If you force it with a drill or a crowbar, an internal glass ampoule breaks and floods the interior compartment with sulfuric acid. Anything made of paper turns to ash in seconds."

Emily gasped. "Mom never told me that."

"She didn't want you to be afraid of it," Luca replied. "She told you it held old memories because she wanted you to treat it with reverence, not curiosity."

Luca unhooked the silver key from around his neck. The key had an unusual, double-toothed pattern, intricately carved with microscopic notches. He inserted the key into the brass padlock, turned it ninety degrees clockwise until a sharp, distinct *click* echoed through the basement, and then pushed the key half an inch deeper before turning it counter-clockwise.

A heavy mechanical clunk reverberated from inside the oak doors.

Marco pulled the heavy wooden leaves open.

Inside, the cabinet was lined with dark green velvet, remarkably preserved from moisture and dust. On the top shelf sat several vintage photo albums and a stack of handwritten letters tied with pink silk ribbon. On the second shelf was a carved wooden jewelry box.

But on the bottom shelf, bolted directly into the concrete foundation, sat a flat steel strongbox.

"This is it," Luca said.

He didn't need a key for the strongbox; he spun a three-digit combination dial with practiced muscle memory: *0-5-1-4*.

"What date is that?" Michael asked quietly.

"The day Emily was born," Luca murmured.

The steel lid unlatched with a hiss of releasing air. Inside lay three thick, leather-bound ledgers, their pages yellowed with age, and several modern black USB flash drives stored in anti-static sleeves, accompanied by a typed document bearing the letterhead of the Bellini Export Corporation.

Luca pulled out the top ledger and opened the cover.

Taped to the inside leaf was a handwritten letter in elegant, flowing cursive. Luca stared down at the handwriting, his breath hitching in his chest.

"Emily," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Read this. It's for you."

Emily stepped forward, Michael keeping a supportive hand on the small of her back. With trembling fingers, she picked up the loose sheet of paper. As she began to read her mother’s words aloud, her voice echoed softly off the concrete walls:

*"My dearest Emily,*

*If you are reading this, it means either my time on this earth has ended, or the wolves have finally gathered at our door.*

*I knew who your father was when I gave him my heart. Luca is a man of honor, but the world he commands is filled with jackals who wear expensive suits and speak of family while sharpening their daggers. Chief among them has always been Gianni Bellini.*

*For thirty years, Gianni used my father’s firm to hide hundreds of millions stolen from municipal contracts, union pension funds, and the allied families. When my father realized what they were doing, Gianni had him silenced in an 'accidental' car crash. But my father gave me the backups.*

*Every bank account, every bribe to federal judges, every offshore entity used by the Bellini syndicate is documented in these pages. I kept them hidden not out of fear, but to ensure that if Gianni ever sought to destroy your father, or touch a hair on your head, Luca would have the weapon to erase the Bellini name from this earth forever.*

*Be brave, my sweet girl. You carry your father’s strength and my stubborn heart. Trust no one who comes asking for this locker, unless they stand beside Luca.*

*With all my love across time,*

*Your Mother, Sofia."*

Emily broke down, pressing the letter against her heart as she wept. Michael pulled her close, kissing the top of her head, tears shining in his own eyes.

Luca picked up the ledgers, his expression no longer merely furious—it was righteous.

"She protected us," Luca whispered, holding the heavy books against his chest. "Even from the grave, she watched over us."

Marco leaned forward, his face dark. "Boss, if Vanessa’s father was sending men here, it means Gianni is desperate. The feds have been sniffing around the dock union for the last three months. Gianni must be facing an indictment. He needed this ledger to see what evidence existed, or to destroy the only trail tying the stolen millions to him."

"He won't get the chance," Luca said. He handed the ledgers to Marco. "Put these in the armored transport. Claire."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Take Emily upstairs into the kitchen. Make her some tea. Michael, find whatever clothes and essentials Emily needs for the next few days. You two are coming back to the estate under twenty-four-hour guard."

"Luca," Michael spoke up, his voice steady. "What about those men who threatened us?"

May you like

Luca turned toward the basement stairs, his silhouette broad and lethal in the dim light. "They made the mistake of stepping onto my family's soil. Now they are going to learn what happens when you wake the dead."
