Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Shadows

The peace inside the mansion was short-lived.

While Victor spent his days coordinating with his lieutenants to prepare for the inevitable war with the Donati syndicate, Chloe found herself trapped in a gilded cage.

She wasn't allowed to clean anymore. Mrs. Gable had explicitly ordered the staff to treat Chloe as a guest of Mr. Russo, which created an awkward, invisible wall between Chloe and her former coworkers.

Only Marco treated her normally, often dropping by her room to bring her hot cocoa or give her updates on Victor’s health.

"He hasn't slept more than three hours a night since the dock ambush," Marco told her one afternoon as they walked along the glass sunroom overlooking the frozen gardens. "He’s working his men double shifts. Donati is moving weapons through the East Side."

"Can't the police stop them?" Chloe asked naively.

Marco laughed softly. "The police chief sits in Leo Donati's pocket, kid. And the mayor gets his campaign funds from Victor. In this city, law isn't written in books. It's negotiated in dark rooms."

"I hate it," Chloe whispered, looking out at the snow. "I hate that he lives like this."

"Victor didn't choose this life," Marco said, his face growing serious. "His father was a monster. He used to beat Victor’s mother in front of him, locked her in rooms for days. When Victor was sixteen, his father tried to sell his sister to an old Capo in New York. Victor killed his father with his bare hands to protect his sister."

Chloe gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.

"He took over the empire at sixteen to keep his family alive," Marco continued. "His sister moved to Europe under a fake name, but Victor stayed behind to bear the weight. He built a wall around his heart so thick that no one could hurt him again. Until you showed up."

Chloe felt a deep, aching pain in her chest for the lonely boy Victor had been.

That evening, while Victor was downstairs in a high-level meeting with his captains, Chloe decided to visit the main kitchen to make him some chamomile tea.

As she approached the kitchen door, she heard voices arguing inside.

"She’s a distraction!" a man’s voice hissed. It was Paulie, one of Victor’s senior lieutenants. "The boss is losing his edge! He canceled the hit on Donati's warehouse because the girl asked him not to bring blood into the house!"

"Victor knows what he's doing," Mrs. Gable’s voice countered firmly.

"No, he doesn't!" Paulie spat out. "Donati offered us a fifty-fifty split on the shipping lines if we hand the girl over to settle the dispute! She's just a maid! Why are we risking our lives for a servant?!"

Chloe pulled back into the shadow of the hallway, her heart sinking into her stomach.

She was a liability.

Victor was risking his men, his empire, and his life for a girl who had no power, no family, and no status. If she stayed, Victor’s own men might turn against him, or Donati would tear his world apart.

Tears blurred her vision as she slowly stepped back from the kitchen door and hurried up the stairs to her room.

She sat on the edge of her large canopy bed, clutching her knees to her chest.

Could she really stay here and watch Victor destroy everything he had built to protect her?

At midnight, the door to her bedroom opened softly.

Victor stepped inside, looking exhausted, his tie loosened, his jacket thrown over his arm. He walked over to her bed and sat beside her, reaching out to gently touch her soft hair.

"Why are you awake, Bennett?" he asked softly.

Chloe looked up at him, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "Victor... do you ever wish you were just a normal man?"

Victor paused, his thumb gently wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "Every time I look at you," he admitted quietly. "I wish I were a man who could take you to a normal restaurant, buy you flowers, and hold your hand without three armed guards standing behind us."

"Then let's end this," she pleaded softly. "Talk to Donati. Find a peace—"

"There is no peace with Donati, Chloe," Victor cut her off, his voice hardening into steel. "He wants control. And he wants to break me. But he made one fatal mistake."

May you like

"What?"

"He showed me what I stand to lose," Victor whispered, pulling her into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck. "And I don't lose what's mine."
