Chapter 6 - The Unfolding Audit

Richard Callahan did not read the documents quickly. He was a man who had built a multi-billion-dollar empire by analyzing financial ledgers with absolute, uncompromising scrutiny. He stood in the grand foyer, ignoring his luggage, ignoring the rain outside, and turned page after page of the wire transfer records Daniel had placed in his hands.
With every page Richard turned, the atmosphere in the hallway grew colder, heavy with an impending catastrophe.
Vivian tried to step forward, her hands shaking as she reached for his arm. "Richard, darling, listen to me! This is a setup! Daniel has always hated me! He’s trying to destroy our marriage because he never accepted me after his mother passed!"
"Is Crestview Management LLC owned by Marcus Vance?" Richard asked, his voice chillingly quiet, not even looking up from the page.
Vivian swallowed hard, her throat making a dry, clicking sound. "Marcus... Marcus is Chelsea’s father, Richard! He was struggling! He was going to lose his house!"
"With my money?" Richard’s head snapped up. His gray eyes, usually calculating and controlled, were blazing with a raw, terrifying fury. "You funneled three point four million dollars from my hospitality division to your ex-husband?"
"It was a loan!" Chelsea shrieked, suddenly running out from the morning room down the corridor, having been listening from behind the door. "He was going to pay it back! As soon as his real estate deal in Fort Lauderdale closed!"
"Shut up, Chelsea!" Vivian yelled, completely dropping her refined persona and wheeling around on her daughter.
"No, let her speak," Daniel intervened smoothly, stepping forward and opening a second folder. "Let’s talk about how the loan was going to be covered up. Yesterday at 1:15 PM, Chelsea took off her tennis bracelet in the guest powder room. But she didn't lose it. She hid it inside the vanity wall panel, mounted on a wire hook with clear adhesive tape."
Daniel pulled out his phone, touched the screen, and handed it to his father. High-definition images of the hidden bracelet, complete with the timestamp and structural dust markers, filled the display.
"I had a forensic team quietly enter the house at midnight while you were asleep, Vivian," Daniel revealed, looking directly at his stepmother. "They dusted the vanity panel, the wire hook, and the clear tape for fingerprints. Do you know whose prints were found on the inside frame of the structural wall?"
Chelsea took a frantic step back, her hands flying to her mouth.
"Not Adeze's," Daniel continued, his voice echoing through the foyer. "Her prints were nowhere near the cavity. The only prints on the wire hook and the tape belong to Chelsea."
Richard stared at the phone screen, then at his stepdaughter, and finally at his wife. The weight of the deception—the theft, the staging, and the cruel attempt to destroy an innocent woman’s life just to cover their tracks—hit him with absolute clarity.
"You brought a baseball bat to a woman who has worked in this house for three years," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he addressed Chelsea. "You struck her in my home. You attempted to frame her for a felony to hide the fact that your mother is a thief."
"Richard, please!" Vivian dropped to her knees, clutching at his trousers, echoing the exact position Adeze had been forced into twenty-four hours earlier. Tears of pure desperation ruined her expensive makeup. "I loved you! I did it for us! For our family's future! Please don't do this!"
Richard looked down at her with unadulterated disgust. He pulled his leg back, stepping out of her reach.
"Security," Richard called out coldly.
The two private security guards who had accompanied him from the airport stepped forward immediately.
"Escort Mrs. Callahan and her daughter to their private quarters," Richard commanded. "They are not to touch any personal items, mobile phones, or laptops. If either of them attempts to leave their rooms before my corporate legal team arrives, lock the doors from the outside."
"Richard! No! You can't do this! I am your wife!" Vivian screamed as the heavy security guards gripped her arms, hoisting her up from the floor. Chelsea was sobbing hysterically as she was led toward the grand staircase.

Within moments, their screams faded down the upper corridors, replaced once again by the heavy, echoing silence of the marble foyer.
Richard stood alone in the center of the room, looking visibly aged, the exhaustion of his long flight finally catching up with him. He turned slowly to look at his son, and then at the quiet Nigerian woman standing beside him, holding her head high.
