Chapter 6 - The Arrival

The drive from Charlotte to my sister’s cabin in Asheville took just over two hours, winding through the dark, quiet roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I turned my phone back on when I reached the cabin at 10:15 PM.

The screen lit up with an explosion of missed calls and text messages. Twenty-seven missed calls from Evan. Twelve frantic text messages. Three voicemails.

I didn't play the voicemails. I opened the text messages instead.

8:04 PM: Claire, what is this? Where are your clothes? 8:12 PM: Why is the house empty?! Answer your phone! 8:25 PM: Claire, where are you?! What did you do with your stuff?! 8:40 PM: I know you're upset about me being away, but this is insane! Call me back right now! 9:15 PM: Please, Claire. Tell me where you are. The key is on the counter. What is this file?

I stared at the last text. What is this file?

He had found the manila folder with the hotel receipts, the flower shop purchases, and the screenshot of Paige’s Instagram story.

The silence that followed that 9:15 PM text was deafening. No more frantic calls. No more angry demands. The lie had collapsed, and he knew it.

My sister, Laura, was waiting for me at the cabin with a roaring fire in the fireplace and a pot of hot tea on the stove. When I walked through the door, she wrapped her arms around me, holding me tight as the fatigue of the last ten days finally washed over me.

"You did it, Claire," Laura whispered into my hair. "You got out."

I sat by the fire, sipping my tea, looking out at the dark silhouette of the pine trees outside the cabin window. For ten days, I had felt like a ghost haunting my own life, waiting for a man who had already moved on.

Now, sitting in the warm cabin, surrounded by the smell of woodsmoke and pine, I finally felt real again.

My phone chimed one last time before I went to bed. It was a text from Evan.

9:55 PM: I’m so sorry, Claire. Please... just let me explain.

I didn't reply. I set the phone face down on the nightstand, closed my eyes, and slept deeply for nine full hours.
