Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Empire

By mid-afternoon, the video from the courtroom had been unsealed by judicial order and leaked directly to the press. Within two hours, the Sterling family name became an international synonym for cruelty and fraud.
The fallout was catastrophic and instantaneous.
Major corporate sponsors pulled their contracts from Sterling Maritime. The Board of Directors of Sterling Heritage Holdings held an emergency closed-door meeting at 3:00 PM; by 3:45 PM, both Rosalind Sterling and Christopher Sterling were stripped of all executive authority, removed from every board seat, and barred from entering company headquarters.
At 5:00 PM, while Christopher sat in an orange jumpsuit in a maximum-security holding cell, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in coordination with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, executed simultaneous search warrants on the Sterling family estate and their corporate offices.
I sat in the corner suite of my law firm, sipping hot tea while Richard worked through stacks of seized financial disclosures that the federal prosecutors were sharing with us under discovery.
“It’s worse than we thought,” Richard said, shaking his head in disgust. “Christopher wasn't just trading on margin. He was running a classic Ponzi operation through Sterling Maritime’s logistics contracts. He used his mother’s social connections to lure wealthy widows into investing in non-existent cargo fleets.”
“And the grandfather’s trust fund?” I asked.
“The fifty-million-dollar trust Clara was supposed to trigger? He had already forged pre-dated loan agreements against it with an offshore syndicate in Macau,” Richard replied. “If he hadn't secured sole custody of Clara this week, the Macau syndicate was going to seize his personal assets. That’s why he was so desperate. That’s why he tried to break Violet.”
“He broke himself instead,” I said coldly.
My phone rang. It was an unlisted number. I answered and placed it on speaker.
“Evelyn… please.”
It was Rosalind’s voice. Gone was the icy, aristocratic disdain. Gone were the sneering insults about gutters and pedigrees. Her voice was cracked, raw, and trembling with sheer, unadulterated terror.
“Rosalind,” I said calmly. “You are violating a temporary restraining order by calling me. That is an arrestable offense.”
“Evelyn, listen to me, I beg you!” she cried, sobbing into the receiver. “The feds are seizing the house! They’re towing my cars! Christopher is in a cell with common murderers! He can’t survive in there, Evelyn, he has asthma! He’s delicate!”
“My daughter was recovering from major surgery while you pressed a cloth over her mouth to suffocate her screams,” I said, my voice dropping to a chill that froze the line. “Where was your concern for delicacy then?”
“We’ll give you whatever you want!” she wailed. “Full custody! No child support claims! We’ll surrender Christopher’s share of the family trust to Violet! Just drop the criminal complaints! Tell the U.S. Attorney you won't testify!”
“You truly don't understand the law, Rosalind,” I said softly. “The State is prosecuting you now. I am merely a witness with a very clear memory and a 4K video recording. And I promise you, I will not miss a single day of your trial.”
“You monster!” she shrieked, her aristocratic facade shattering into gutter fury. “You ruined us! You destroyed three generations of Sterling honor!”
“No, Rosalind,” I replied smoothly. “You destroyed yourselves. I simply turned on the lights so the world could watch the vermin scatter.”
I hung up the phone and turned to Richard. “Has Marcus placed round-the-clock protective details at the hospital?”
“Yes. Two deputies outside Violet’s door, and private security at every hospital entrance. She is completely safe.”

“Good,” I said, looking out over the city lights. “Because when cornered beasts realize they have lost everything, they do not surrender. They lash out.”
