Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Ledger

The courtroom doors banged shut behind us. Judge Harrison Vance sat upon the high bench, his white hair neat, his stern expression surveying the counsel tables.
“We are here on an emergency ex-parte motion in the matter of Sterling v. Sterling,” Judge Vance announced, adjusting his spectacles. “I see Mr. Julian Thorne for the petitioner, Christopher Sterling. And for the respondent… wait.” The judge paused, squinting at the notice of appearance before him. His eyebrows climbed toward his hairline. “Evelyn Vance? As in *the* Evelyn Vance?”
“Good morning, Your Honor,” I said, stepping crisply up to the lectern. “Appearing on behalf of my daughter, Violet Vance-Sterling.”
Judge Vance cleared his throat, suddenly sitting up straighter. “It has been some time, counselor. Welcome back to the well.”
“Thank you, Your Honor. We are prepared to address Mr. Thorne’s motion immediately.”
Thorne rushed forward, eager to seize control of the narrative. “Your Honor! This is an extraordinary emergency. Last night, the respondent’s mother, accompanied by local law enforcement acting entirely without jurisdiction, forcibly abducted my client’s six-day-old infant daughter from the Sterling ancestral home. The respondent, Violet, is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, as attested by Dr. Arthur Bradley’s emergency psychiatric evaluation, marked as Exhibit A.”
Thorne slammed the document onto the clerk’s desk with dramatic flair.
“My client, Christopher Sterling, is a respected civic leader, a devoted husband, and the sole stable parent in this tragic dynamic. We demand the immediate turnover of minor child Clara Sterling to petitioner’s sole physical custody, and an immediate mandatory seventy-two-hour psychiatric commitment order for the respondent.”
Judge Vance looked over the papers, frowning. “These are grave allegations, Mr. Thorne. Dr. Bradley’s report indicates severe detachment from reality.” The judge turned his stern gaze upon me. “Counselor Vance, how do you respond to the psychiatric evaluation?”
I stepped forward, opening my thin leather folder.
“Your Honor, I respond by informing the Court that Exhibit A is not a medical evaluation. It is an instrument of criminal fraud, purchased for the sum of seventy-five thousand dollars.”
Christopher jumped up from his chair. “That’s a lie! That’s an outrageous slander!”
“Sit down, Mr. Sterling!” Judge Vance barked, slamming his gavel down once. “One more outburst and you will spend the afternoon in holding!”
I continued, my voice measured and lethal. “Thirty minutes ago, Dr. Arthur Bradley surrendered his medical license to the State Medical Board and signed a sworn confession under federal immunity proffer. He admitted that he never conducted a single psychiatric examination of Violet Vance. He signed blank, pre-dated commitment forms provided directly to him by Rosalind Sterling in exchange for debt forgiveness on an offshore gambling account managed by Sterling Heritage Holdings.”
I handed a stamped, certified document to the bailiff. “I submit respondent’s Exhibit 1: Dr. Bradley’s sworn confession, accompanied by bank wire transfers from Christopher Sterling’s corporate account directly to Dr. Bradley’s shell entity in the Cayman Islands.”
Julian Thorne’s face went completely gray. He spun around, whispering furiously at Christopher, who had broken into a cold, dripping sweat.
“Furthermore, Your Honor,” I said, stepping closer to the bench. “The petitioner claims he is motivated by paternal concern. Allow me to enlighten the Court as to the true nature of Mr. Sterling’s sudden passion for sole custody.”
I drew out a second document—the fruit of Richard’s forensic accounting through the early morning hours.
“Under the terms of the late Arthur Sterling’s irrevocable dynasty trust, Christopher Sterling was granted an income interest only. However, Clause 14(b) states unequivocally that upon the birth of a direct fourth-generation heir, the principal of the fifty-million-dollar trust dissolves, with eighty percent distributing immediately to the *custodial parent* who holds unencumbered legal guardianship.”
A dead silence descended upon the courtroom.

“Christopher Sterling’s private equity firm, Sterling Maritime, is currently forty-two million dollars in debt due to illegal margin trading,” I stated, projecting my voice so every reporter in the gallery could hear every single syllable. “He didn't want his daughter, Your Honor. He needed to eliminate his wife so he could pillage his infant child’s trust fund to keep himself out of federal prison.”
