Chapter 10 - The Breath of Life

By 11:30 PM, the roof of Mount Sinai Hospital was illuminated by flashing red and blue lights as a medical transport helicopter touched down amidst swirling snow.

A specialized surgical transport team wheeled a blue thermal container across the landing pad, rushing down the elevator directly to Operating Room 4 on the third floor.

Daniel stood in the waiting room outside the surgical suite, wearing blue hospital scrubs over his shirt, sitting beside Ruth Bennett and little Emma.

The double doors of the surgical suite opened, and Dr. Aris Thorne stepped out, pulling off her surgical mask, her face tired but radiant with quiet triumph.

Emma jumped up from her chair, clutching Daniel’s hand tightly. "Is Mommy done?"

Dr. Thorne knelt down in front of Emma, a warm, beautiful smile spreading across her face.

"Your mommy is done, sweetheart," Dr. Thorne said gently. "The surgery was a complete success. Her new lungs are working perfectly, and she is breathing all on her own."

Ruth burst into tears, covering her face with her hands, sinking back into her chair with overwhelming relief.

Daniel closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the wall, letting out a long, ragged breath that he felt he had been holding since he first stood behind Santa Claus in Bryant Square three days ago.

"Can I see her?" Emma asked, her small voice trembling with hope.

"She’s sleeping right now, baby," Dr. Thorne said, touching Emma's cheek. "But you can come stand beside her bed and hold her hand."

Ten minutes later, Daniel stood in the doorway of the Intensive Care Unit recovery room.

Sarah Miller lay peacefully in the bed. The loud, humming oxygen concentrator that had dominated her small apartment was gone. She was attached only to standard baseline heart monitors. Her skin was warm, pink, and full of healthy color.

Her chest rose and fell in a slow, deep, effortless rhythm.

Emma stood on a small footstool beside the bed, holding her mother's hand, leaning down to whisper into her ear.

"Mommy," Emma whispered softly. "You don't have to be cold anymore. Santa brought us Mr. Daniel."

Daniel felt a single, warm tear slip down his cheek. He reached into his jacket pocket, his fingers curling around Charlie Mercer’s worn leather notebook.

He pulled out his pen, opened the last page of the book, and drew a neat, firm line through the last entry:

Sarah Miller & Emma. 412 East 138th St, Apt 3B.

Beside it, in crisp, clear print, Daniel wrote one single word:

Fixed.
