Chapter 8 - The Shadow over Chicago

The winter months gave way to early spring, transforming the desert landscape around Las Vegas into a fleeting expanse of pale green and wild desert blooms.

Life at the Summerlin estate had evolved into a seamless blend of high-stakes corporate management and quiet, surprisingly domestic moments. Penelope maintained her role as executive consultant for Lux Catering—which had expanded its operations across three state lines under her leadership—while quietly serving as Dominic’s closest strategic advisor.

She had an office on the second floor of the estate, right across from Dominic’s library, equipped with a custom mahogany desk and three monitors tracking both hospitality contracts and regional security feeds.

On a rainy Tuesday evening in April, Penelope walked into Dominic’s library carrying two cups of fresh espresso.

Dominic was sitting at his desk, staring at a spread of paper maps and digital intelligence printouts covering the Midwest territory. His face was grim, dark lines etched around his eyes that hadn't been there a week ago.

"You've been staring at those Chicago reports for six hours," Penelope said gently, setting a porcelain cup beside his elbow.

Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, running both hands through his thick dark hair. "Joseph Moretti isn't backing down, Penelope. He lost twelve million dollars during the Bellagio heist, his brother Victor was humiliated at the summit, and his street crews are losing turf in Reno."

"What is he doing?" she asked, seating herself on the edge of the desk, her dark silk skirt draping over the dark wood.

"He’s organizing an alliance," Dominic said, pointing to a series of marked locations on the map. "He’s meeting with the leaders of the Philadelphia and Detroit families in Denver next Thursday. If they form a unified syndicate, they can cut off our supply routes through the Midwest and starve my legitimate hotel holdings of union labor."

Penelope looked at the map, her analytical mind immediately breaking the problem down like a complex, multi-tiered catering logistics crisis.

"They're meeting in Denver?" she asked.

"At the Brown Palace Hotel," Dominic nodded. "Under the guise of a private charitable foundation gala."

A slow, brilliant smile spread across Penelope’s face.

Dominic stopped, narrowing his eyes at her. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Who is coordinating the catering for the Brown Palace gala?" she asked, leaning forward.

Dominic pulled out a document from the folder, scanning the event details. "A firm out of Colorado called Alpine Events... why?"

"Because Alpine Events went bankrupt three weeks ago," Penelope said, her dark eyes flashing with sharp intelligence. "I know their owner, Sarah. She reached out to Lux Catering last Tuesday asking if we wanted to buy out their remaining event contracts in Colorado."

Dominic slowly sat up, his grey eyes widening as he caught her train of thought. "You own the catering contract for the Moretti alliance summit."

"I don't just own it, Dominic," Penelope said, tapping her finger against his chest. "I run it. Which means my staff will be inside that ballroom setting up microphones, service stations, and private dining rooms twenty-four hours before Joseph Moretti even steps off his private jet."

Dominic stared at her for three seconds before letting out a loud, booming laugh that echoed through the high ceilings of the library. He reached out, grabbing her waist, and pulled her down onto his lap, wrapping his arms around her like a steel vise.

"You are absolute poison to my enemies, Penelope Davis," he murmured against her neck, kissing the sweet spot right beneath her ear.

"I’m an event director, Mr. Rossi," she laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck. "And Joseph Moretti is about to have a very bad party."
