Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The sit-down took place in the grand hall on the ground floor.

Elena did not stay locked in the solarium. She knew the geography of the manor better than Lucian’s men ever could; she had cleaned every air grate, every service corridor, every hidden pantry panel. She slipped down the narrow service stairs, positioning herself behind the heavy velvet drapes of the mezzanine gallery overlooking the hall.

Below, the tension was thick enough to choke on.

Dante sat alone in the massive carved chair at the head of the marble table, a crystal glass of whiskey in his hand. Marco and six of his best men stood behind him, their coats unbuttoned, hands resting near their hips.

Opposite him sat Lucian—a wiry, silver-haired boss from the northern territories, his face twisted in a smug, predatory grin. Ten armed men fanned out behind him, their eyes darting across the room.

"You look well, Dante," Lucian said, his voice dripping with false warmth. "We heard rumors that a stray bullet took you out of commission in Genoa. We were worried the Rossi family was without a head."

"As you can see," Dante said, sipping his whiskey without looking at the man, "the rumors were exaggerated."

"Good. Good," Lucian leaned forward, placing both hands on the table. "Then we can speak plainly. The ports are mine now, Dante. You’ve been hiding in this fortress for a month like an old widow. The families in Milan have agreed. Your territory is being divided."

Dante set the glass down. The click of the crystal against the marble sounded like a gunshot in the silent room.

"Who agreed?" Dante asked softly.

"The Santoro brothers. Moretti’s remnants. Me." Lucian smirked. "You don't have the stomach for this war anymore, Rossi. You’re soft. You're bleeding out behind closed gates."

Dante stood up.

He didn't rush. He didn't raise his voice. He stood with the effortless, terrifying grace of an apex predator that had decided the prey had talked long enough.

"You sent the hit team through my east garden two weeks ago," Dante stated neutrally.

Lucian’s grin stiffened. "I don't know what you’re talking about."

"The hit team failed," Dante continued, walking slowly around the edge of the table. "They died in my library. And before the leader died, he gave Marco the frequency of your personal satellite relay."

Lucian’s eyes widened. He began to stand. "Rossi—"

"You made two mistakes, Lucian," Dante said, stopping three paces from the northern boss. His hand slipped inside his wool overcoat. "First, you thought because I was wounded, I was dead. Second..."

Dante drew the Sig Sauer with a motion so fast it blurred in the low chandelier light.

"...you brought your men into my house, where they could look at what is mine."

*Crack.*

The bullet took Lucian directly between the eyes.

The northern boss flew backward over his chair, crashing onto the marble floor with his heels drumming a brief, violent cadence against the stone.

Pandemonium erupted.

Gunfire ripped through the grand hall, flashes illuminating the baroque ceiling in strobe-light bursts of violence. But Dante’s men were prepared; Marco’s team opened fire with military precision from behind the marble pillars.

Elena watched from the mezzanine as Dante moved through the crossfire like a ghost. He did not duck; he did not flinch. He fired three times, dropping three of Lucian’s guards with cold, mechanical headshots, his left hand drawing a second weapon to clear the perimeter.

Within ninety seconds, the hall was quiet again.

Smoke hung heavy in the air, smelling of cordite, blood, and spent brass. Ten bodies lay scattered across the polished floor. Marco was already directing his men with short, hand gestures, hauling corpses toward the cellar incinerator.

Dante stood in the center of the carnage, ejecting the empty magazine from his pistol and sliding a fresh one home with a sharp, metallic click.

He holstered the gun, turned his face upward toward the mezzanine drapes, and looked directly into the shadows where Elena stood.

He knew she had been there the entire time.

May you like

He raised two fingers, beckoning her down.
