Chapter 7 - The Inciting Touch

Elena did not calculate the movement.

She had spent weeks maintaining an invisible barrier—three paces of deference, eyes lowered, hands folded, professional neutrality masking the fire burning in her belly. But looking at him now—standing tall, healed, magnificent, offering her freedom on a silver platter while preparing to send her away—the barrier shattered.

She closed the distance between them.

Dante’s eyes narrowed slightly, surprised by her sudden movement, but he did not step back. He stood like an iron pillar as she rose onto the tips of her toes.

Elena reached up, her small hand coming to rest against his broad chest, feeling the heavy, rhythmic thrum of his heart beneath the wool coat. She tilted her head, leaned into his space, and pressed her lips to his rough, stubbled cheekbone.

The kiss was soft, lingering, and entirely innocent—a pure gesture of raw, human gratitude.

His skin smelled of winter air, expensive tobacco, and cedarwood.

"Thank you," she breathed against his ear. "For everything."

She pulled back to step away.

She never made it.

The change in Dante was instantaneous and violent.

The air in the solarium snapped like a high-tension cable. Dante’s hand lashed out, his fingers catching her upper arm in an iron vice, stopping her retreat mid-step.

"What did you do?" his voice was no longer gravel; it was a low, guttural growl that resonated through her bones.

Before Elena could inhale, he spun her around and drove her backward.

Her back hit the cold oak paneling of the wall with a dull thud. Before she could recover her balance, Dante stepped into her space, crowding her, his massive frame completely cutting off the light from the room. He slammed his left palm against the wood beside her ear, his forearm blocking her escape on one side, while his body pressed flush against hers on the other.

Elena was trapped.

His chest rose and fell against hers, heavy and hard as granite. His breath was ragged, hot, washing over her lips in rapid bursts. The cold, calculating Don had vanished; in his place was a predator whose cage had been deliberately kicked open.

"Dante—" she gasped, her hands coming up against his lapels.

"You don't touch me," he hissed, his hazel eyes blazing with a feral, terrifying intensity that pinned her where she stood. "You don't put your mouth on my skin and walk away like you gave a coin to a beggar."

"It was a thank you—"

"I don't want your gratitude!" he snarled, leaning down until his lips were a fraction of an inch from hers, so close she could feel the heat radiating from his mouth. "Do you have any idea what you've been doing to me in this house for three weeks? Walking into my bedroom with your rolled-up sleeves, putting your hands on my wounds, looking at me like I was just a man instead of a devil?"

Elena’s heart pounded so hard she thought her ribs would crack. But the fear that should have paralyzed her was swallowed whole by an electric, intoxicating rush of desire.

"You are just a man," she challenged, her voice trembling but defiant, her dark eyes locking with his fire. "And you didn't pull away."

Dante let out a sound between a curse and a groan.

His free hand moved from her arm, his long fingers tangling violently into the dark hair at the nape of her neck. He tilted her head back, exposing her throat, his thumb pressing into the pulse racing wildly beneath her skin.

"You should have taken the key and run to Florence, little maid," he growled against her lips.

"I don't want Florence," she whispered.

Dante’s control snapped completely.

He crushed his mouth down onto hers.
