Chapter 9 - Ashes and Clarity

That evening, Evelyn attended the seasonal gala for the New York Historical Society at the Plaza. It was an event she had not designed, which meant she was there strictly as a guest.

She wore an emerald silk slip dress that cascaded down her back, her hair swept up in an elegant, modern twist. On her wrist was a single, understated platinum cuff—a gift Lucien had left on her vanity in Hudson.

The moment she stepped through the brass revolving doors, the room fell into a hushed, vibrating silence.

The whispers began instantly.

*“Is that Evelyn Vale?”*

*“She completely ruined the Cross family...”*

*“They say she’s living with Moretti now.”*

*“Look at her. She looks completely different.”*

Evelyn walked with her head held high, her spine like tempered steel. She accepted a glass of champagne from a passing waiter, nodding politely to two former clients who suddenly seemed desperate to catch her eye.

Across the room, Mrs. Cross—Adrian’s mother—stood with a cluster of aging socialites, staring at Evelyn with venomous, impotent fury.

Evelyn didn't look away. She raised her champagne glass slightly in Mrs. Cross’s direction, took a slow, deliberate sip, and turned her back on them.

A hand settled against the small of her back.

Warm. Firm. Immovable.

She didn't need to look to know who it was. The entire room’s oxygen had just been drawn toward the doorway.

Lucien was standing beside her, impeccably tailored, his pale gray eyes sweeping over the assembled elite with the cold indifference of an emperor inspecting a provincial market.

“Enjoying yourself?” he murmured near her ear.

“Immensely,” she replied, leaning slightly into his shoulder. “They’re terrified.”

“They should be,” Lucien said quietly. “They spent years making you feel small. Now they know that touching you means dealing with me.”

“I don’t need you to fight all my battles, Lucien.”

May you like

“I know,” he said, his mouth brushing the curve of her temple in full view of the four hundred socialites holding their breath. “That’s why I let you deliver the final blow to Adrian yourself. But I will always hold the perimeter.”
