Chapter 5 - Shadow Architect

By Friday morning, the zoning violations on the Long Island City facility had vanished without a trace, accompanied by a groveling, written apology from the deputy director of the Department of Buildings citing an “administrative clerical error.”

At 1:00 PM, Adrian Cross arrived unannounced at Evelyn’s Greene Street studio.

Megan tried to block the door, but Adrian shoved past her, his tie slightly askew, his patrician features pale with barely suppressed rage.

“Evelyn!”

Evelyn didn't flinch. She sat at her drafting desk, calmly finishing a sketch for a centerpiece installation. “You have approximately ten seconds to leave this private commercial space before Megan calls building security.”

Adrian slammed his palms down on the drafting board, rattling her inkwells. “Did you know what he was doing? Did you set this up?”

“I have no idea what you’re referring to, Adrian.”

“The mezzanine loan on the Hamptons property! Moretti’s holding group filed a covenant default this morning! My father is in the hospital with an arrhythmia, and our credit facility is frozen!” His breath was ragged, the polished exterior completely stripped away. “You went to him. You offered yourself to that animal to get back at me!”

Evelyn stood up slowly.

She realized in that instant that she felt no fear. None of the suffocating inadequacy that had plagued her during the final year of their relationship remained. Adrian looked small—a petulant child whose inherited toys were being systematically repossessed by someone who actually understood how to work.

“I didn't offer myself to anyone,” Evelyn said, her voice freezing the air between them. “You tried to use municipal inspectors to strangle my livelihood, Adrian. You tried to buy my company behind my back. You brought a knife to a negotiation, and you are horrified to discover that the other person brought an artillery battery.”

“He is a criminal, Evelyn!” Adrian snarled, leaning into her face. “He’s a butcher with an offshore banking license! Do you think he cares about you? When he’s finished stripping my family’s assets, he’ll discard you like garbage!”

“He treats me with respect,” she said, looking him dead in the eyes. “Which makes him vastly superior to you in every measurable metric.”

“Get out,” a new voice said.

The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.

Lucien Moretti was leaning against the threshold of the open office door. He wasn't wearing a coat. His hands were resting casually in his trouser pockets, his posture deceptively relaxed.

Behind him, two of his men stood quietly in the corridor.

Adrian straightened up, his chest heaving, his face turning an ugly shade of mottled red. “Moretti. This is a private conversation between two people who were engaged to be married.”

Lucien walked into the room. He didn't rush. He moved with the smooth, terrifying economy of an apex predator that knew there were no exits the other animal could reach in time.

He stopped an arm’s length from Adrian.

“Ms. Vale told you to leave,” Lucien said quietly.

“This doesn't concern you!” Adrian spat.

Lucien reached out, caught Adrian by the throat with one hand, and drove him backward into the brick pillar beside the drafting table.

The impact was hollow and sickening.

Megan gasped. Evelyn remained frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Lucien didn't squeeze hard enough to crush the trachea, but his grip was iron, lifting Adrian slightly onto his toes. Adrian’s hands clawed futilely at Lucien’s wrist, his eyes bulging with immediate, paralyzing terror.

“Listen to me very carefully, Adrian,” Lucien whispered, his voice calm, almost tender. “You will sign the debt restructuring agreement my attorneys delivered this morning. You will surrender your family’s shares in the Brooklyn waterfront terminal. And if you ever speak to Evelyn Vale again, if you walk on the same side of the street as her office, if your name appears in the same paragraph as hers in a social column, I will take the rest of your father’s estate and distribute it to municipal sanitation unions.”

Adrian could only manage a choked, strangled nod.

Lucien released him.

Adrian collapsed against the brick, coughing violently, clutching his neck. Without looking back, he scrambled toward the door, practically falling over his own feet as he fled down the stairwell.

Silence descended upon the loft.

Lucien stood where he was, his breathing completely even. He looked down at his right hand, adjusted the cuff of his shirt, and then looked at Evelyn.

“Megan,” Lucien said without turning around. “Take the rest of the afternoon off. With pay.”

Megan grabbed her purse, looked at Evelyn with wide eyes, and bolted out the door.

Evelyn leaned back against her drafting table, her knees slightly unsteady. “You didn't have to do that.”

May you like

“Yes,” Lucien said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that burned straight through her defenses. “I did.”
