Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

At 3:00 PM, Marcus Hale held an emergency press conference at the Hale Tower lobby.
Surrounded by microphones, with Victoria standing beside him in an elegant black mourning suit looking like an aggrieved saint, Marcus stepped to the lectern.
“My family has been subjected to a malicious smear campaign,” Marcus boomed into the microphones, his silver hair catching the flashbulbs. “Ethan Pierce’s unfortunate mental collapse at the altar was seized upon by criminal opportunists seeking to extort our charitable trust. We have filed emergency protection orders to safeguard the minor involved from these dangerous actors—”
“Mr. Hale!”
The booming voice echoed across the marble lobby, cutting Marcus off mid-sentence.
The sea of fifty journalists parted. Walking straight down the center aisle was Ethan Pierce. He was not alone. Flanked on either side were four special agents from the FBI’s Southern District of New York, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Claire Reyes. Behind them walked Julian Brooks, carrying three thick binders of federal evidence.
Victoria took an involuntary step backward, her face turning gray. “Security! Get him out of here!”
The building security guards moved forward, but Special Agent Reyes stepped into their path, flashing her federal badge. “Step back. Federal business.”
Ethan stopped at the foot of the podium. He didn't look at Marcus; his gaze locked entirely on Victoria.
“You told the press that Olivia was a blackmailer, Victoria,” Ethan said, his voice amplified by the live media microphones. “You told them she was an addict who abandoned her child.”
“Turn off the cameras!” Marcus Hale barked, signaling frantically to his aides.
Julian Brooks connected a tablet to the media pool’s live auxiliary feed. Instantly, the massive LED screens behind the podium—usually reserved for Hale stock tickers—flickered to life.
Victoria’s recorded voice boomed through the speakers with deafening clarity:
*“...If you don't take the check and leave the state, Ethan will find out what happens when his building permits are suddenly flagged for structural violations. My father controls the zoning commission... Take the money, tell him the baby belongs to your ex-boyfriend, and vanish...”*
The lobby went dead silent. The only sound was the furious clicking of camera shutters. Reporters scrambled toward the front, shouting questions simultaneously.
“Miss Hale, is that your voice?”
“Mr. Hale, did you authorize municipal bribery through the zoning board?”
Agent Reyes stepped up to the podium, producing a federal arrest warrant. “Victoria Hale, Marcus Hale. You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, witness tampering, extortion, and interstate embezzlement. You have the right to remain silent.”
Victoria lunged toward Ethan, her manicured facade shattering into madness. “You ruined me!” she screamed, her nails reaching for his eyes before two agents tackled her to the marble floor, twisting her arms behind her back. “You were nothing without my family! You were a nobody!”
Ethan looked down at her as the handcuffs clicked into place around her wrists.
“I was nothing because I let a monster choose my life,” Ethan said quietly. “Now, Olivia is going to rest. And you are going to prison.”

Marcus Hale stood frozen as handcuffs were secured around his own wrists, his empire crumbling live on international television.
