Chapter 4 - The Final Breath

For the next two hours, the world outside ceased to exist.

The rain battered the fourth-floor window, streaming down the glass like molten lead. Ethan pulled a hard plastic chair to the edge of the bed and held Olivia with one arm while Lucy lay curled on the opposite side, her head resting on her mother’s paper-thin hip.

Olivia drifted in and out of consciousness, but whenever her eyes cleared, she looked at Ethan with an intensity that burned.

“She’s yours, Ethan,” Olivia whispered, her breath growing shallower, each syllable bought with tremendous effort. “Look at her hands. The long fingers. She draws... just like you used to draw your blueprints.”

Ethan looked at Lucy, who had fallen into an exhausted daze, clutching her mother’s hospital gown. The resemblance was indisputable. The shape of her jaw, the slight arch of her brow, the stubborn line of her mouth—it was his lineage, preserved in secret, nurtured in poverty while he had lived in penthouse luxury with a sociopath.

“She will never spend another night in fear,” Ethan vowed, his voice thick with unshakeable resolve. “I swear to you on my soul, Olivia. I will raise her. I will protect her with every breath and every dollar I possess. Nobody will ever touch her.”

A serene, fragile smile touched Olivia’s pale lips. “I kept the records,” she murmured, her eyes closing halfway. “Under the lining... of the envelope. The safe-deposit key... Box 214... Midtown National. The recordings... she didn't know I recorded her visits.”

“Rest now, Livvy,” Ethan whispered, using the old pet name that had remained locked in his heart for over a decade. “I’ve got the envelope. I’ll finish this.”

Olivia looked at her daughter one last time. She lifted her hand an inch, brushing Lucy’s damp hair from her forehead. “My brave girl,” she whispered. “You did it.”

At 6:42 PM, the steady cadence of the heart monitor slowed.

The beats grew distant: sixty, forty-five, thirty. Lucy stirred, her eyes snapping open in sudden terror. “Mom? Mom!”

“Olivia,” Ethan called out, his throat burning.

Olivia Bennett did not open her eyes again. Her chest rose one final time, exhaled a soft, resting sigh, and fell still. The monitor emitted a continuous, flat tone that pierced the quiet room.

Lucy buried her face in her mother’s chest, letting out a wail that tore through the sterile walls. Ethan wrapped his arms around his daughter, pulling her into his chest, holding her tight as the nurses quietly opened the door. He closed his eyes, let his tears soak into Lucy’s hair, and let the grief wash over him.

When he opened his eyes again, the grief was gone, replaced by an absolute, freezing darkness.
