Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Spring arrived in the northern hills with a gentle warmth that melted the heavy winter snows, turning the rolling fields into vibrant expanses of green grass and wild pine blossoms.
The new Moretti residence was nothing like the dark, looming fortress in the city. Designed entirely around light, space, and peace, the house featured high timber ceilings, massive glass windows that overlooked the open valley, and wide wrap-around porches. There were no armed men patrolling the lawns in dark coats, no soundproofed basement doors, and no heavy iron gates locking out the world.
A small, discreet security detail remained stationed at the far edge of the vast property, but their presence was entirely invisible, blending into the quiet rhythm of the countryside.
It was a bright Saturday morning. The sweet smell of blooming apple trees drifted through the open windows of the sunlit kitchen.
Clara stood near the marble island, pouring freshly brewed tea into two porcelain cups. Her jaw had healed completely, leaving only a tiny, faint scar near her chin that was barely noticeable. She wore a simple, elegant ivory dress, her dark hair pinned back neatly.
Luca walked into the kitchen from the side porch. He was wearing a casual linen shirt, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his posture relaxed and easy. He walked over to Clara, taking one of the tea cups from her hand, his fingers brushing against hers in a familiar, warm touch that no longer carried any tension.
Over the past six months, the bond between them had grown far beyond the boundaries of guardian and employer. Bound by shared trauma, mutual respect, and an overwhelming love for Mia, they had slowly, naturally stepped into a quiet, deep partnership that filled the house with genuine warmth.
"Where is she?" Luca asked, taking a sip of his tea, looking out toward the back garden.
"She's out in the meadow with Marco," Clara smiled softly, pointing toward the green hill behind the house.
Out in the sunny field, Marco—the once-terrifying mafia lieutenant—was sitting awkwardly on a wooden bench, wearing a ridiculous pink flower crown that Mia had placed on his scarred head. Mia was running through the tall grass in a bright yellow sundress, chasing a golden butterfly with a small net, her clear, ringing laughter echoing across the open valley.
Luca shook his head, a genuine laugh escaping his chest. "If the syndicate bosses in the city could see Marco right now, they would think he'd lost his mind."
"He loves her," Clara said gently, leaning her shoulder against Luca’s arm as they watched from the window. "Everyone does."
"Because you taught us how to see her," Luca said softly, turning his head to look at Clara. His gray eyes were filled with a deep, boundless affection. "You came into a house full of blood, paranoia, and shadows, Clara, and you brought light back into our lives."
Luca reached out, gently taking Clara’s hand in his, intertwining his fingers with hers. "I spoke with the legal team yesterday. The final adoption papers and guardianship documents are ready for your signature. You are officially her mother now, Clara. In every way that matters."
Clara looked into Luca’s eyes, her heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of peace and fulfillment. The poor maid who had scrubbed cold marble floors with an eviction notice in her apron pocket was gone, replaced by a woman who had found her true family, her home, and a love that was unshakeable.

"I loved her the moment she showed me her broken porcelain, Luca," Clara whispered softly, stepping closer into his embrace. "I've been her mother in my heart since that day."
Luca leaned down and gently kissed her forehead, wrapping his strong arm securely around her waist as they stood together by the window, watching their daughter play in the golden sunlight.
