Chapter 7 - The Final Web

My suspicion proved prophetic within twelve hours.

At dawn on December twenty-sixth, an emergency call came through from County General. A corrupt orderly, paid through a shell account in the Cayman Islands, had slipped a keycard and a change of scrubs into Victoria’s isolation room. She had bypassed the floor guards through the laundry chute and was picked up by an unmarked black SUV waiting in the alley.

She hadn't fled the country. She was heading north toward our family’s private cabin in the Adirondacks.

That cabin was off the grid, built on land inherited from my grandfather. Inside the reinforced basement was the only thing Victoria needed to complete her escape: my primary deployment cache, containing untraceable international currencies, bearer bonds, and my grandfather’s collection of gold bullion worth over two million dollars.

She thought she was smarter than me. She thought that because I was a father, my tactical discipline had softened.

She was wrong.

I left Marcus with Clara at the federal installation in Syracuse, where she was guarded by a platoon of active-duty Marines from my old battalion. Clara sat in bed, eating warm pancakes, her spine supported by a soft, humane therapeutic cushion provided by a real physician.

Before I walked out the door, Clara grabbed my sleeve. Her face was pale, but her eyes carried an ancient wisdom no child should ever possess.

“Don't let her hurt anyone else, Daddy,” she whispered.

I kissed her forehead. “Never again, Clara. I promise.”

I didn't drive my truck; I took an all-terrain snowmobile loaded with tactical gear, cutting across the frozen ridges of the Adirondack state forest. The blizzard had passed, leaving behind a world of blinding white ice and razor-sharp pine branches.

Through my thermal binoculars, I spotted the tire tracks leading up the winding private gravel road toward the cabin. The front porch lights were on. Smoke curled from the stone chimney.

She was inside, tearing through the floorboards to reach the vault.

I approached from the downwind side, moving like a phantom across the snowdrifts. The sub-zero wind erased my footprints behind me.
