Chapter 10 - The New Perimeter

By nine o'clock that night, Elena was standing in the master guest suite on the thirty-eighth floor of the Bellmont Tower—two floors below Lorenzo’s main penthouse.

The room was larger than her entire apartment building in Queens.

A king-sized bed covered in ivory silk sheets stood against the far wall. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the glowing grid of Manhattan, covered in a quiet coat of fresh snow. A fireplace crackled in the corner, throwing warm orange light across hardwood floors covered in thick Persian rugs.

In the center of the room sat a white wooden crib, brought in thirty minutes earlier by three of Lorenzo’s men.

Sophia was lying inside, fast asleep, wearing a fresh pink sleeper, her thumb tucked into her mouth, her fever completely gone.

Elena walked to the window, holding a cup of warm tea that a uniformed butler had brought her twenty minutes ago. She looked down at her own reflection in the glass.

She was wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and dark wool trousers that had been brought to her room by a personal stylist Lorenzo had summoned at seven o'clock. Her old, ruined coat, her split boots, and her wet sweater had been taken away to be cleaned or burned.

She didn't look like a maid anymore. She looked like someone who belonged on the top floor of a skyscraper.

The door to the suite opened with a quiet click.

Lorenzo walked in.

He had removed his vest and tie. His dark charcoal shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing thick, muscular forearms covered in fine dark hair. He looked tired, but the terrifying, cold edge in his eyes had softened into something deeper and far more dangerous.

He walked over to the crib, looked down at Sophia for a long moment, and then turned to Elena.

"She’s sleeping well," Lorenzo said quietly.

"The doctor said the antibiotics would make her drowsy," Elena replied, setting her tea cup down on the windowsill.

Lorenzo walked toward her, stopping two feet away. He looked out at the snowy city below, then down at her face in the glass reflection.

"Your landlord, Mr. Henderson," Lorenzo said offhandedly.

Elena turned her head quickly. "What about him?"

"He had seven code violations on his building," Lorenzo said, his tone perfectly conversational. "Illegally converted basement units, uninspected boilers, broken fire escapes. The city building department condemned the property at four o'clock today. He was arrested for tax fraud twenty minutes later."

Elena stared at him, her mouth opening slightly. "You... you had him arrested?"

"I bought the building at six o'clock," Lorenzo corrected her, a faint smirk touching his lips. "I am having it demolished on Monday. The tenants are being relocated to modern units in Jackson Heights at my expense."

Elena didn't know whether to laugh or cry. The man who had threatened to throw her onto the sidewalk twelve hours ago had been wiped off the map with two phone calls from the man standing beside her.

"Why do you do that?" Elena whispered, looking up into his pale grey eyes. "Reorganize the world like it’s a chess board?"

"Because for thirty-eight years, the world was cruel to me," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deep, reflective quiet. "My father was killed when I was twelve. My mother died in a asylum in Naples. I learned early that if you do not control the perimeter, the perimeter will destroy you."

He reached out, his large hand gently covering hers where it rested on the glass sill.

"You grew up in foster homes, Elena," Lorenzo said, his thumb tracing the soft skin of her wrist. "You know what it feels like to have no perimeter. To be at the mercy of people who see you as a line item on an expense sheet."

Elena looked down at his hand covering hers. His skin was warm, thick, and held a strength that felt like an iron anchor in a storm.

May you like

"I spent my whole life being invisible, Mr. Moretti," she whispered.

"Not anymore," Lorenzo said softly, his fingers tightening around hers. "Not in this house."
