Chapter 9 - The Blood Covenant

The great nave of St. Patrick’s was a cavern of gold leaf, white lilies, and three hundred of the most powerful people on the continent holding their breath in unison.

The music of the massive pipe organ shook the stone pillars, a triumphant, thundering procession that drowned out the sirens of the police cruisers cordoning off the entirety of Midtown.

Willa walked down the long, red-carpeted aisle alone.

She had refused an escort. She had no father to give her away, no brothers to sell her for an alliance, and no friends from the catering agency who could survive three minutes in this assembly of predators. She walked with her head held high, the midnight-green lining of her cream silk train sweeping the carpet, her veil pinned back so that every senator, every mafia boss, and every federal judge could see the clear, unyielding amber of her eyes.

At the altar stood Kendrick.

He did not look like a groom; he looked like an emperor awaiting the arrival of his co-regent. Beside him stood Penny, looking tiny and radiant in her pale blue dress, holding a small velvet pillow bearing two simple bands of unadorned, heavy platinum.

Titan lay at the foot of the altar steps, his massive gray head resting on his paws, his eyes open and watchful as the congregation sat in absolute, terrified silence.

Willa climbed the four marble steps.

The cardinal, an old man with hands as thin as parchment and eyes that had seen forty years of dirty political compromises, looked between them with an expression of profound, weary understanding.

"Who gives this woman to this man?" the cardinal’s voice echoed through the high vaults.

"She gives herself," Kendrick spoke. His voice was not loud, but it cut through the organ music with the clarity of a church bell. "And I receive her under the protection of my name, my steel, and my blood."

The cardinal blinked, hesitating for a fraction of a second at the non-canonical phrasing, but one look at Kendrick’s eyes made the old priest swallow and proceed with the ancient Latin rites.

When the time came for the rings, Penny stepped forward.

The little girl looked up at Willa, her small face glowing with a triumphant, pure joy. "I told you Daddy would fix it," she whispered.

Willa felt a single tear break past her defenses, hot and clean, trailing down the side of her nose. She reached down, lifting the heavier of the two platinum bands from the velvet cushion.

She took Kendrick’s left hand.

The skin of his palm was rough against hers, the scars of his life written in the ridges of his flesh. She slid the band over his ring finger, her touch firm, deliberate, without a single tremor.

"With this ring," Willa said, her voice ringing out across the three hundred silent guests, "I claim the house of Ashford. I claim its debts, its wars, and its honor. And I swear... that whoever stands against you will have to step over me first."

A faint, sharp breath rippled through the front pews where the heads of the Castellano and Moretti families sat.

Kendrick took the smaller band. He did not merely slide it onto her finger; he held her hand up between them, pressing his thumb against the back of her knuckles until the metal bit slightly into her skin—a seal, a physical imprint of ownership and protection that could never be undone.

"With this ring," Kendrick said, looking not at the priest, not at the cross, but straight into the center of her soul, "I place my life between you and the earth. Where you walk, my soldiers will clear the road. Where you sleep, my walls will stand. And from this day until the hour my heart stops... you are the law within my gates."

The cardinal raised his trembling hands. "By the authority vested in me... I pronounce you husband and wife."

Kendrick did not wait for the benediction.

He reached out, caught Willa by the waist with both arms, and pulled her off her feet, his mouth coming down on hers with a fierce, possessive hunger that sent a shockwave of heat through the cold silk of her gown.

Willa didn't pull away. Her arms went around his neck, her fingers tangling in the thick hair at the base of his skull, giving herself over to the dark, terrifying shelter of his embrace while three hundred people slowly, hesitantly rose to their feet to applaud the marriage that had just rewritten the map of New York.
