Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Assistant

A thousand miles away, in a cramped, two-bedroom stucco rental on the dusty outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona, Sophia Reynolds sat on a threadbare sofa, staring at the small, cracked screen of her prepaid phone.
The dry desert heat beat relentlessly against the thin windowpanes. There were no marble floors here. No twenty-foot vaulted ceilings overlooking Lake Shore Drive. No private drivers, no corporate credit cards, no reservations at Michelin-starred restaurants where the maitre d' bowed and whispered, *Right this way, Miss Reynolds.*
Her designer handbags sat stacked in cardboard boxes against the wall—the only remnants of a life she had meticulously constructed over six years of calculated, predatory lies.
Across the room, six-year-old Lily sat on the carpet, coloring in an inexpensive coloring book.
"Mommy?" Lily asked, looking up with her big, innocent brown eyes—eyes that bore not a single trace of the Moretti bloodline. "When is Mr. Vincent coming to visit us? You said he had a surprise for my bedroom in the new house."
Sophia felt a violent, suffocating knot tighten in her throat. She looked at her daughter, feeling the crushing weight of her own greed crashing down upon her shoulders.
"He... he isn't coming, Lily," Sophia whispered, her voice cracking.
"Did I do something bad?" the little girl asked, her lower lip trembling. "Is that why we didn't get to live in the castle with the big fountain?"
"No, baby," Sophia said, tears streaming unchecked down her face, washing away the last remnants of her carefully maintained pride. "You didn't do anything bad. Mommy did."
Her phone buzzed. A text message appeared from an unknown number.
It was from Samuel Vance.
*Notice of Final Compliance:* the text read. *The transfer of the Cayman trust funds back to Moretti Holdings has been confirmed by Barclays Private Wealth. Your monthly administrative stipend of three thousand dollars has been authorized under the terms of your voluntary departure covenant. Any breach of non-disclosure, any attempt to contact Vincent Moretti, or any media communication will result in the immediate revocation of the stipend and the unsealing of the Cook County grand jury indictment.*
*Have a peaceful life in Arizona, Miss Reynolds.*
Sophia dropped the phone onto the cushion.
Three thousand dollars a month. That was it. That was the entirety of what she had left after six years of scheming, manipulation, and extortion. She had flown too close to the sun, intoxicated by the wealth and vulnerability of a man whose arrogance had made him blind.
She had thought Claire Moretti was a weak, sheltered socialite who would weep in a corner and accept a quiet financial payoff to avoid embarrassment. She had never imagined that behind Claire’s quiet elegance lay the ruthless, brilliant mind of a woman who could dismantle an empire in a matter of days.

Sophia buried her face in her hands, listening to the monotonous hum of the cheap air conditioner, realizing that the castle was gone forever.
