Chapter 10 - The Garden of Rebirth

One year after the assault.

The sun was warm and bright as we walked through the newly opened Elm Street Community Park—the very land where my father's house had once stood.

Where the cold, sterile kitchen used to be, there was now a wide circular flowerbed filled with blooming yellow tulips, lavender, and white roses. A wooden playground sat near the edge of the property, filled with the happy sound of children swinging and sliding in the autumn breeze.

Ethan pushed Lily in a stroller while I walked beside him, holding his hand, feeling the crisp air fill my lungs.

Near the center of the park stood a small bronze plaque mounted on a low stone wall, dedicated by the city to commemorate the revitalization of the neighborhood.

We stopped in front of the flowerbed.

I looked at the ground where I had once laid in terror, clutching my stomach, waiting for Ethan to save me. The memory was still there, but it no longer carried power over me. It was just a shadow in the background of a life that was now overflowing with light, love, and safety.

Lily reached out from her stroller, pointing her tiny hand toward a bright yellow butterfly fluttering over the tulips, letting out a delighted, high-pitched giggle.

"Look, Mama!" she babbled, her first real attempt at forming words. "Look!"

I dropped to my knees beside her stroller, laughing as I captured her tiny hands in mine.

"I see it, sweetie," I smiled, my eyes shining with happy tears. "It's beautiful."

Ethan knelt beside us, wrapping his arm around my waist, looking at our daughter with absolute adoration.

"She's going to run this park in a couple of years," Ethan joked softly.

"She can run whatever she wants," I replied, leaning my head against his shoulder. "She has the whole world ahead of her."
