Chapter 4 - The Closed Door Meeting

By 7:55 a.m., Daniel was seated at the far end of the mahogany conference table on the thirty-fourth floor of the Ashford Tower. Across from him sat Victoria Ashford—Vivienne and Julian’s mother—dressed in a spotless grey tweed suit, her hands folded over a leather monogrammed binder. Julian sat to her left, looking pale, his tie slightly crooked, his eyes darting toward the door every time it opened.

Vivienne had not been allowed past the security turnstiles on the ground floor. She was currently downstairs in the marble lobby, flanked by two building security guards, screaming into her cell phone at her personal lawyer.

"This is an outrage, Daniel," Victoria Ashford said, her voice dripping with ice. "You are an independent trustee brought in as a formality by my late husband. You have no standing to interfere in a private family matter."

"I am the sole fiduciary custodian of forty percent of the voting equity in this corporation, Victoria," Daniel said, placing a slim black tablet on the table in front of him. "My standing is absolute under Massachusetts corporate law. And this is not a private family matter. It is an aggravated assault on corporate property against an employee of thirty years, committed in an attempt to manipulate a vote on a twelve-million-dollar liquidity transfer."

Julian cleared his throat, his face flushing red. "Uncle Daniel... look, there’s been a massive misunderstanding. Lena panicked. She’s young, she’s pregnant, her hormones are elevated—"

Daniel held up a single finger, silencing Julian mid-sentence. The coldness in my brother’s eyes made Julian flinch.

"Do not speak to me about your wife’s state of mind, Julian," Daniel said. "You watched a six-year-old woman fall down a flight of stone stairs after being shoved by your sister. You then attempted to intimidate the victim into falsifying a statement, and you texted your wife—my niece—threatening her with social ruin if she spoke the truth."

"Rosa tripped!" Julian insisted, though his voice lacked conviction. "She’s seventy years old! She misstepped!"

Daniel pressed a button on his tablet. The high-definition audio of Rosa’s hospital deposition filled the boardroom, her clear, unyielding words echoing off the glass walls. Beside Victoria, the chief legal officer, Henderson, closed his eyes and buried his face in his hands.

"Furthermore," Daniel continued as the recording finished, "we have reviewed the security footage from the residential estate’s upper hallway."

Julian’s head snapped up. "What? The hallway camera was deactivated for the gala!"

"The main security camera was," Daniel said with a thin, predatory smile. "The nanny-cam installed by your late father in the grandfather clock to monitor the butler's pantry passage was not. Leonard was a paranoid man, Julian. He trusted his children even less than I do. The footage has already been rendered to a secure server. It shows Vivienne standing over Lena, reaching out with both hands, and shoving Mrs. Alvarez down the stairs when she intervened."

Victoria Ashford’s posture finally broke. Her shoulders slumped by a fraction of an inch, her manicured fingers tightening until her knuckles turned white.

"What do you want, Daniel?" Victoria asked, her tone shifting from outrage to survival. "If this gets to the press... if the board sees this... the refinancing fails immediately. The bank will pull the credit line by noon."

"Vivienne’s credit line is already dead," Daniel said smoothly. "As independent trustee, I am formally voting NO on the twelve-million-dollar transfer. Furthermore, I am filing a petition with the probate court at 9:00 a.m. to permanently remove Vivienne from the Ashford Trust beneficiaries list under the moral turpitude clause."

"You can't do that to my sister!" Julian shouted, half-rising from his leather chair. "She has debts! She has obligations in London!"

"Then she can sell her personal wardrobe and her sports cars to pay them," Daniel snapped. "Now, let us discuss your position, Julian."

May you like

Julian froze, halfway out of his chair. "My... my position?"

"You are Lena’s husband," Daniel said, leaning forward. "And you are currently an officer of this company. In five minutes, you are going to make a choice. You can either sign a full statement admitting your knowledge of the event and agreeing to a total, unencumbered financial separation for Lena and her child... or I hand this tablet to the District Attorney’s office before the morning session begins."
