Chapter 6 - The Confession in Chains

The revelation transformed the room from a domestic crime scene into an active national security debriefing.

General Vance stepped forward, his eyes burning with an intensity that made even the seasoned CID agents stiffen. He gestured to the MPs.

"Separate them," Vance ordered. "Take the mother to the holding cell at Fort Belvoir. Move Chloe Carter to Interrogation Room B at the Defense Counterintelligence facility. She is now classified as an unlawful intelligence asset under the Espionage Act."

"No! No! Please!" Chloe screamed as two MPs pulled her to her feet. Her designer dress ripped at the shoulder as she thrashed against their grip. "Natalie! Tell them! I didn't mean to! The man—his name was Julian—he told me he was an angel investor from Geneva! He said he just wanted to impress his partners by showing he had access to top Pentagon officials! I didn't know they were going to blow up the convoy! I swear to God I didn't know!"

"You received seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars into an account in the Cayman Islands forty-eight hours after Dad’s funeral, Chloe," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "Did you think that was an angel investment?"

Chloe choked on her own breath, her eyes bulging with terror. She had no answer.

She had known. Even if she hadn't known the bomb would detonate on that specific highway outside Amman, she had known she was selling her father's movements for cash. And she had taken that blood money and spent it on sports cars, penthouses, and diamond bracelets.

"Get her out of my sight," Ethan ordered quietly.

The MPs dragged Chloe out of the ballroom, her hysterical wails echoing down the marble corridors until the heavy exterior doors slammed shut, cutting off the sound completely.

Evelyn was left kneeling on the floor, staring blankly at the shattered champagne glass beside her knees. Her world—the carefully constructed illusion of high-society prestige, untouchable wealth, and absolute matriarchal control—had disintegrated in less than two hours.

"Natalie..." she whispered, looking up at me with hollow, broken eyes. "What have you done?"

"I didn't do this, Mother," I replied, kneeling down so that my eyes were level with hers. "You did this the day you decided that Dad’s honor, his life, and my service were disposable commodities meant to fund your greed."

"I have nothing left," she whimpered. "They took the house. They took the accounts. Where am I supposed to go?"

"You're going to federal detention, Evelyn," Ethan said, standing beside me. "And when the Department of Justice is finished with the treason and fraud charges, you will spend the rest of your natural life in a federal corrections facility. The military widow's pension is officially rescinded under the Treason and Subversion Provisions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice."

Ethan signaled to the remaining agents. "Process her."

As Evelyn was led away, her head bowed in utter defeat, she did not look back. The woman who had ruled our family with an iron fist of manipulation and guilt had finally been reduced to what she truly was: an accomplice to the destruction of her own family.
