Chapter 2 - The Perimeter Closes

Ethan reached my side within three seconds. He didn't ask if I was all right; he already knew my pain tolerance far exceeded a pair of open-handed slaps from a socialite. Instead, his gloved fingers gently traced the reddening skin of my jaw, his thumb lingering over the bruise already forming.

"Status, Lieutenant Colonel?" he murmured under his breath, his voice pitched so low only my ears could catch the words.

"Structural integrity intact, Colonel," I replied quietly, maintaining the steady, relaxed posture of a bride-to-be while my eyes scanned the perimeter. "Target has committed assault in the presence of twenty-four active federal witnesses."

Ethan’s jaw tightened. "She crossed the wire. We execute protocol Alpha?"

"Execute."

Ethan gave a single, imperceptible nod toward the terrace.

Immediately, the atmosphere in the ballroom shifted. It wasn't loud or chaotic. To an untrained civilian, it simply looked as though several impeccably dressed men had finished their drinks and were heading toward the exits. But to anyone with military training, it was a textbook tactical containment.

Four men in dark charcoal suits took positions at the grand double doors, casually blocking the egress. Two others moved silently to flank the VIP lounge where Evelyn and Chloe were already holding court, drinking vintage champagne and mocking me to the wife of a state senator.

"Natalie, darling," Evelyn’s voice carried over the murmurs as she waved a manicured hand toward a waiter. "Don't pout. Go tell Ethan to bring over the contract for the downtown townhouse he promised to buy us. Chloe needs a place with at least three bedrooms to recover from her stress."

Chloe giggled, checking her lip gloss in the reflection of her gold compact. "And tell him I want the one overlooking the river, Nat. Since you're marrying into a billionaire family, it's the least you can do for your big sister."

Before I could answer, a tall, imposing man with silver hair and a razor-sharp jawline stepped between Evelyn and the bar. It was General Vance—Ethan’s uncle, and the presiding commander of the Army’s Special Operations Command.

"Mrs. Carter," General Vance said, his voice carrying the deep resonance of forty years of battlefield authority. "I suggest you put the glass down."

Evelyn blinked in surprise, looking the older gentleman up and down. She assumed, like most civilians, that he was merely an elderly relative of Ethan’s corporate family.

"Excuse me?" Evelyn said, adopting her haughtiest tone. "I don't believe I asked for your input, sir. This is a private family matter regarding my late husband's estate."

"Your late husband was General Marcus Carter," General Vance said coldly. "A Medal of Honor recipient and a commander of the United States Armed Forces. Which makes your conduct in this room not merely disgusting, Mrs. Carter, but a matter of federal jurisdiction."

Chloe rolled her eyes, scoffing loudly. "Oh, please! Who do you think you are? The party police? Natalie was being disrespectful to our mother. A mother has the right to slap her bratty daughter. Mind your own business before we have security throw you out."

A soft, dark chuckle escaped Ethan as he stepped forward, placing his arm around my waist.

"Security won't be throwing my uncle out, Chloe," Ethan said smoothly. "In fact, the only people leaving this venue in the custody of security are the two of you."

Evelyn laughed, though the sound was suddenly strained. "Ethan, please. Don't let Natalie poison your mind. She’s an emotional basket case. She works some meaningless desk job in logistics while Chloe is trying to build a real career in public relations! If you want to join our family, you need to understand who truly matters."

"You still don't understand, do you?" I asked, stepping out from behind Ethan.

I reached into the inner pocket of my silk bridal blazer and pulled out a matte-black leather wallet. With a flick of my wrist, it flipped open.

Pinned inside was the gold eagle insignia of a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, paired with a Department of Defense badge bearing a classification clearance stripe that Evelyn had never seen in her life.

May you like

"I don't work an ordinary desk job, Mother," I said, watching the color slowly drain from her cheeks. "And you just committed felony assault on an active-duty commanding officer on federal contract grounds."
