Chapter 5 - The Red Handcuffs

“You cannot arrest me!” Linda shrieked, backing away into the grand staircase. “This is Christmas Day! This is Lake Forest! Richard, call Chief Patterson! Call him right now!”

“Chief Patterson recused himself twenty minutes ago, Mrs. Harrington,” Detective Miller said evenly, motioning to the two uniformed officers. “The complainant provided high-definition photographic evidence of second-degree burns, a forensic medical report from Northwestern Memorial’s trauma unit, and a signed witness affidavit.”

“Whose affidavit?” Linda screamed as the female officer grabbed her right arm and wrenched it behind her back. “Sarah is lying! It was an accident!”

“Not Sarah’s affidavit,” the detective said, snapping the cold steel cuffs around her wrists with a crisp *click*. “Your daughter-in-law’s security detail submitted the video.”

Daniel froze. “What video?”

“Mr. Vance’s private protection team maintains an exterior surveillance array on Miss Vance’s vehicle,” Detective Miller explained dispassionately. “The high-output telephoto lens captured the entire dining room through your sheer curtains from forty yards away. The slap. The soup bowl being knocked. The child screaming. You’re on 4K digital video, Mrs. Harrington.”

Linda began to wail, a high-pitched, feral sound of pure humiliation as she was marched toward the front door. “Daniel! Daniel, do something! Richard!”

Richard did not move. He stood by the credenza, his hands jammed into his pockets, staring at the floor. He knew the video had already been archived. He knew that any judge in Cook or Lake County looking at that footage would deny bail or set it prohibitively high just to send a message.

“Officer,” Daniel pleaded, running toward them in his socks. “Can I come with her? Can I post bond?”

Detective Miller turned and handed Daniel a thick manila envelope.

“You’re Daniel Harrington?”

“Yes! Yes, I’m her son!”

“You’re also served,” Detective Miller said. “Emergency Order of Protection. Issued two hours ago by Judge Evelyn Hayes. You are barred from coming within five hundred feet of Sarah Vance or Emma Vance. You are barred from entering the Gold Coast residence, the Vance Tower, or Emma’s preschool. Any violation is an automatic Class 4 felony.”

Daniel took the envelope as if it were burning his fingers. He tore it open with shaking hands.

There it was: *Sarah Vance v. Daniel Harrington*.

Not *Sarah Harrington*.

She had already restored her maiden name in the legal filings. Attached to the protection order was a petition for absolute divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty, failure to protect a minor, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, accompanied by an emergency motion for sole legal and physical custody of Emma.

“No,” Daniel whispered, collapsing against the entryway mirror. “No, no, no... Sarah, please...”

Outside, the neighbors—prominent doctors, venture capitalists, and private equity partners who lived on the prestigious block—had stepped out onto their manicured lawns, bundled in cashmere coats, watching as Linda Harrington was escorted down her own driveway in handcuffs and pushed into the back of a police cruiser.

By noon, the arrest was the only topic of conversation at the Lake Forest Country Club.

By two o’clock, the story had leaked to the *Chicago Tribune* business desk: *Matriarch of Harrington Logistics Arrested for Domestic Battery; Ties to Vance Empire Severed.*
