Chapter 7 - The Legal Siege

By Monday of the following week, the battle lines were formally drawn.

I sat in the office of Sarah Jenkins, a formidable family law attorney in downtown Boston whom Aunt Gwen had recommended. The sun streamed through the high office windows, illuminating the thick stacks of financial documents and police reports spread across the mahogany desk.

"The police report you filed on Friday regarding the assault at Darlene’s house was a crucial step, Maren," Sarah said, reviewing the paperwork through her reading glasses. "The fact that we have a recorded statement from Bethany confirming Darlene struck you without provocation completely eliminates any chance of a successful grandparent visitation claim."

"What about the financial fraud?" I asked, feeling a heavy weight sitting on my lungs.

"Wade signed his name to that line of credit," Sarah explained. "While it constitutes a breach of fiduciary trust within the marriage, the debt is legally his. In the divorce filing, we will request a full equitable distribution of assets, ensuring that his separate debts are not assigned to you, and we will secure exclusive temporary occupancy of your apartment."

"Divorce," I repeated the word softly.

Six months ago, when Wade was writing June beneath our daughter's bassinet, the word had felt as distant as another planet. Now, it felt like the only lifeboat left on a sinking ship.

"He will fight you for custody," Sarah warned gently. "His mother will push him to seek joint custody just to maintain access to June."

"He doesn't know how to change a diaper without asking his mother which brand of cream to use," I said coldly. "He doesn't want custody. He wants his mother to stop screaming at him."

Two days later, Wade was officially served with divorce papers at his office.

The reaction was immediate and explosive. Darlene attempted to come to my apartment building that evening, but Aunt Gwen had already alerted the building supervisor. The police were called when Darlene began pounding on the glass lobby doors, shouting that I was a "baby stealer" and a "heartless monster."

She was issued a formal trespass warning and escorted off the property in a squad car.

Celia, the cousin who had live-streamed the party, posted an angry video online detailing how I had "destroyed a grieving grandmother's heart." But within hours, Bethany responded directly in the comments, publicly stating the truth: that Darlene had assaulted me, lied about the cake, and emotionally abused her own family for years.

The public façade Darlene had spent thirty years cultivating began to crack into a thousand pieces.
