Chapter 6 - The Architect's Vengeance

By late afternoon, Audrey had joined us in Walter’s car, and we returned to the Philadelphia safe house. Clara Moreau was already waiting on an encrypted video conference link that Elena had established with Boston.

Clara appeared on the screen. She was thirty-four, strikingly beautiful with sharp, elegant features, but her movements were rigid. When she shifted in her office chair, I noticed the slight grimace of someone who lived in permanent, chronic pain.

"Hello, Mara," Clara said, her voice crisp, articulate, and cold as a razor blade. "I hear Vivienne finally tried the gravity trick again."

"You survived a second-story drop," I said.

"Barely," Clara replied, clicking a button to display digital scans of her spine. "Two titanium rods, four pins, and eight months of physical therapy to learn how to walk again. Reid was charming until I uncovered that Vivienne was laundering money through offshore shell corporations using our anticipated marriage trust. When I refused to sign a prenuptial agreement that made me personally liable for their corporate tax fraud, Vivienne invited me to the terrace to 'discuss an amicable compromise.' Reid grabbed my arms from behind, and Vivienne pushed me over the limestone railing."

The sheer depravity of what she was describing made the room grow freezing cold. "They held you while she pushed you?"

"Reid is his mother’s lapdog, just like Bennett," Clara stated without emotion. "They controlled the police chief in Gladwyne. The incident was classified as an accidental fall caused by alcohol consumption, even though my toxicology report was completely clean. They threatened to bankrupt my father’s architecture firm if I pursued a civil suit. I took the settlement money, moved to Massachusetts, and spent six years waiting for those monsters to make a mistake they couldn't buy their way out of."

"The mistake is on this server," Elena said, pivoting the laptop to show Clara the synchronized footage of Vivienne shoving me down the stone stairs.

Clara watched the screen in silence. As Vivienne’s hands struck my back and I plummeted toward the frozen steps, Clara’s jaw twitched. When Bennett walked past my crumpled form to escort his mother inside, Clara let out a sharp, savage laugh.

"They haven't changed their playbook by a single syllable," Clara whispered. "They think their wealth makes them gods."

"Tomorrow morning, Vivienne has scheduled an ex parte emergency hearing in Montgomery County Family Court," Elena announced, pulling up a court docket on her tablet. "Bennett has filed an emergency motion for sole legal and physical custody of Miles. He submitted a sworn affidavit from a hired psychiatrist claiming Mara is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, that she deliberately threw herself and the infant down the stairs to extort the family, and that she fled the hospital with a stolen child."

A wave of nausea washed over me. "He’s trying to steal my son."

"He’s not trying to steal him, Mara," Audrey said, placing her warm hand over my plaster cast. "He’s trying to erase you. Just like he erased my child. Just like they erased Clara’s future."

"Then we don't go to the local Gladwyne police," Clara declared firmly from Boston. "We take this directly to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the State Attorney General. I have financial records proving corporate wire fraud. Audrey has the paper trail of the false medical commitment. And Mara has the physical assault captured in ultra-high-definition. We hit them from every flank at once."

Before we could finalize the legal filings, the safe house’s exterior perimeter alarm began to wail.
