Chapter 4 - The Lens of Truth

The sun rose over the Philadelphia skyline in shades of bruised purple and slate gray. I hadn't slept for a single second. Every creak of the old floorboards made me jump, expecting Bennett’s private security team to batter down the door.
By eight in the morning, Elena had set up an encrypted laptop on the kitchen table.
"Leo Vance operates a boutique production studio in Fishtown," Elena said, typing rapidly. "I ran a background check on his business. Bennett’s hedge fund paid him a twenty-five-thousand-dollar retainer yesterday afternoon. Half of it was wired an hour after your incident on the steps."
My heart sank. "He bought him. Bennett already paid him off."
"A retainer isn't a non-disclosure agreement until the contract is executed," Elena countered. "Leo Vance is a visual artist with an impeccable professional reputation. Let's see if he's willing to trade a felony obstruction charge for his integrity."
We called Leo Vance using a spoofed burner line. When the phone clicked and a tired, nervous male voice answered, Elena put the call on speaker.
"Leo Vance?" I asked, my voice raw.
A pause. "Who is this?"
"My name is Mara Carrow. I am the woman Vivienne Carrow pushed down the front steps outside her mansion last night. The woman holding the five-month-old infant."
Complete silence hung on the other end of the line. For five agonizing seconds, I thought he was going to hang up. Then came a ragged exhale.
"Mrs. Carrow," Leo said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I... I was told you were resting comfortably at a private clinic."
"I am hiding in a protective shelter with a shattered wrist, trying to keep my son from being taken by the family that tried to cripple me," I said fiercely. "Leo, tell me you have the footage."
"Mrs. Carrow, Bennett Carrow’s attorney called me at two in the morning," Leo stammered, panic lacing every word. "He demanded all memory cards from the exterior cameras. He said there was a proprietary family privacy breach. He threatened to sue my production house into bankruptcy if I didn't hand over every hard drive by noon today."
"Did you hand them over?" I demanded.
"Not yet," Leo whispered. "Because I reviewed the footage before they called. I saw it, Mrs. Carrow. I zoomed in on camera four. Vivienne didn't slip. She watched you step down, she checked to see if anyone was looking, and she rammed both palms into your shoulder blades. You arched backward trying to shield the baby's skull. It was... it was horrific. It looked like attempted murder."
Tears spilled over my eyelashes, hot and vindicating. "Leo, if you give that drive to Bennett, they will destroy it, and they will lock me away just like they did to Bennett’s first wife. You have a mother, a sister, maybe a daughter. Would you leave them at the mercy of people like the Carrows?"
The line went silent again. I could hear Leo’s heavy breathing, the clatter of a coffee mug against a desk.
"I can't get involved in a criminal trial, Mrs. Carrow," he said weakly. "They have powerful judges in Montgomery County. Bennett’s uncle sits on the appellate bench."
"You don't have to testify right now," Elena intervened, her voice authoritative and commanding. "Upload the uncompressed raw camera files to an encrypted, decentralized server we provide. Once the digital hash is timestamped, Bennett cannot claim the video was manipulated or fabricated. If you do this, we will protect your identity until the state attorney general issues a formal grand jury subpoena. If you destroy that footage, Mr. Vance, you are an accessory to aggravated assault of a minor and reckless endangerment."
A long beat passed.
"Give me the upload link," Leo whispered. "God forgive me, but that old woman belongs in a cage."
Ten minutes later, the file transfer began. On the high-definition monitor in Elena’s kitchen, the events of the previous night played back with sickening clarity. In crisp 4K resolution, Vivienne’s face was twisted in predatory malice as she lunged forward. The camera caught Bennett’s arrival, his cold glance at me, and his deliberate decision to turn away and follow his mother back inside.

We had the weapon. But to destroy the Carrow dynasty once and for all, we needed the voices of the ghosts they had buried before me.
