Chapter 8 - The Law Steps In

"Martha Vance! Open the door. It's the Sheriff's Department!"

A heavy fist pounded against the flimsy wooden door of the motel room. The vibrations rattled the cheap chain lock, sending dust cascading down the frame.

Martha scrambled backward into the bathroom, knocking over a plastic trash can. "Go away! I haven't done anything! Leave me alone!"

"Martha, we have warrants for your arrest signed by the county prosecutor," the officer’s voice echoed firmly from outside. "Grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and misdemeanor assault. If you don't open this door immediately, we will breach it."

"Assault?!" Martha shrieked through the closed bathroom door. "It was a haircut! It was a family tradition!"

"Open the door, ma'am. Five seconds."

Before Martha could respond, a heavy boot struck the lock. The wooden frame splintered with a deafening crack, and the door swung wide. Three officers entered with flashlights drawn, sweeping the dim room before locating Martha huddled behind the shower curtain, clutching her purse to her chest like a shield.

"Hands where we can see them, Martha," the leading officer commanded, stepping forward with handcuffs drawn.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Martha screamed, kicking and flailing as the officers pulled her out from behind the curtain. "Do you know who I am?! I am Martha Vance! I dine with governors! My son is—"

"Your son is the one who filed the assault complaint on behalf of his wife, ma'am," the detective said coolly, clicking the steel cuffs around her wrists with professional detachment. "And Mrs. Evelyn Sterling has formally filed charges for first-degree grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent."

As they dragged her out into the cool midnight air, a handful of motel guests poked their heads out of neighboring rooms, watching the disgraced socialite be forced into the back of a police cruiser in her torn sequin dress and smudged makeup.

Meanwhile, forty miles away, Nick and I were checking into our honeymoon suite at a boutique mountain lodge.

The suite was warm, lit by a crackling stone fireplace, with a bottle of vintage wine chilling on the table. The silence of the mountain woods was a balm to our battered nerves. Nick had carried my bags inside, then immediately drawn me into his arms, kissing the crown of my head, right where Antoine had set the delicate blooms.

"You okay?" he asked softly, resting his forehead against mine.

"I think I finally am," I whispered, reaching up to touch the soft, short ends of my hair. "It felt like a nightmare at first, Nick. When I felt those scissors... I felt so small. So helpless."

"You are neither of those things," Nick said fiercely, his eyes shining in the firelight. "You are the strongest person I have ever known. Martha spent my whole life making me believe that cruelty was normal, that family meant tolerating abuse just to keep up appearances. Tonight, watching you stand up on that dance floor... you gave me the courage to finally finish what I should have done years ago."

My phone buzzed on the bedside table. It was a text from Arthur Vance.

*Detective Miller just called. Martha is in custody. The judge set bail at a quarter-million dollars, cash only. No one is posting it for her. Rest easy tonight, children. Tomorrow belongs to you.*

May you like

I set the phone down, turned off the ringer, and looked at my husband. The dark shadow that had hovered over our relationship for seven long years had finally been lifted into the daylight and destroyed.
