Chapter 7 - The Downward Spiral

Martha sat on the stained edge of a cheap polyester bedspread, her breath coming in ragged, hysterical gasps. The garish neon sign outside buzzed through the cracked window blinds, casting alternating lines of red and blue across her disheveled dress.

Her mascara had run in black streaks down her cheeks. Her sequined designer dress—purchased with embezzled funds—was torn at the shoulder where she had snagged it on the emergency exit door.

"It's a mistake," she muttered feverishly, tapping frantically at her cracked smartphone screen. "It's all a misunderstanding. They’ll see. They’ll all see."

She dialed her sister, Brenda. The line rang three times before clicking open.

"Brenda! Thank God!" Martha cried out, clutching the phone with trembling fingers. "Brenda, you have to help me! Nick has lost his mind! He brought that... that monster Arthur to the wedding, and Evelyn has turned against me! They’re trying to frame me, Brenda! I need to stay at your place in the Hamptons until—"

"Don't call this number again, Martha," Brenda's voice cut through the receiver, flat, icy, and disgusted.

"What?! Brenda, I'm your sister!"

"You told me Arthur beat you and abandoned Nick in a gutter!" Brenda hissed, her voice trembling with decades of suppressed fury. "I helped you hide! I gave you ten thousand dollars of my own divorce settlement to help you get on your feet! And tonight, Arthur Vance stood there with the original police reports showing you kidnapped Nick while Arthur was in the ICU after a car accident you caused!"

"That's a lie! Arthur is a judge, he manipulated the—"

"The police are looking for you, Martha," Brenda interrupted coldly. "Detective Miller from the financial crimes division was already at the reception taking statements from Evelyn. If you come anywhere near my house, I will personally open the door for the officers. You are sick. You butchered that poor girl's hair on her wedding day like a lunatic. Do not ever speak to me again."

The line went dead.

Martha stared at the screen in disbelief. A high-pitched scream of rage escaped her lips as she hurled the phone against the drywall, shattering the glass casing into pieces.

She sank to her knees on the filthy carpet, pulling at her own styled hair. Her entire kingdom of cards—built on decades of lies, social climbing, manipulation, and borrowed wealth—had collapsed in forty-five minutes. She had tried to humiliate Clara, to show the world that Clara was nothing more than a peasant who could be shorn like sheep. Instead, she had stripped herself bare before everyone whose opinion she cherished.

Outside the motel, the low rumble of an engine caught her attention. Headlights swept across the blinds.

Martha froze. She crawled toward the window, parting the plastic slats with shaking fingers.
