Chapter 11 - The Vow of Steel

That evening, we drove down to the private docks along the lakefront where Carlo’s private yacht was moored.
The city lights bounced off the dark, rolling water of Lake Michigan, creating a mesmerizing path of shimmering gold across the dark surface. A gentle spring breeze carried the fresh scent of the water, cool and invigorating against my face.
We walked along the quiet wooden pier, hand in hand, our shadows stretching long behind us under the warm glow of the vintage copper lamps.
Carlo stopped near the edge of the dock, turning me to face him. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
He opened it.
Inside lay a breathtaking vintage ring—a flawless five-carat emerald-cut diamond set in a band of solid platinum, surrounded by microscopic black diamonds that caught the moonlight like tiny, brilliant stars.
I stared at it, my breath catching in my throat. "Carlo... what is this?"
"Seven years ago, when we got married, I gave you a ring that belonged to my family's legacy," Carlo said, taking the old ring from my finger and sliding the magnificent new diamond onto my hand. It fit perfectly, cold and heavy against my skin. "It was a ring that carried the weight of my past, my father's debts, and the dark business of this city."
He looked up into my eyes, his face illuminated by the moonlight, his voice trembling with a deep, profound emotion.
"This ring doesn't belong to the Barbieri family past," Carlo whispered, wrapping his hand over mine. "This ring belongs to our future. It's a promise that I will never again stand between you and the truth. It's a promise that we fight together, we reign together, and if the world burns... we burn it down as equals."
I looked down at the brilliant stone sparkling on my hand, then up into the face of the man who had tried to die for me, the man who had learned that true strength wasn't in standing alone, but in loving without fear.
"I don't need a promise that the world won't burn, Carlo," I said, stepping closer to him, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down until our lips were inches apart. "I just need you holding the torch."
Carlo smiled—a slow, breathtaking, lethal smile that made my heart race just as fast as it had seven years ago.
"Always, my love," he murmured. "Always."

He pulled me into a kiss that swallowed the quiet night, the dark water, and the glittering lights of the city we now ruled together.
Behind us, the massive towers of Chicago stood tall and silent against the velvet sky—no longer a cage, no longer a battleground, but a kingdom built on gunpowder, black ledgers, and a love that could never be broken.
