Chapter 11 - The Spring of Carmela Romano

Six months later.

Spring had finally arrived in Chicago. The ice on Lake Michigan had melted into clear, dark blue waters, and the cherry blossom trees along the drive of the Lake Forest estate were in full, vibrant bloom.

I walked down the garden path wearing a simple cream-colored silk dress, holding a small bouquet of fresh white lilies.

Standing near the sunroom was Aaron, holding a leather folder of new corporate acquisition deeds for our expanded international shipping lines in Canada.

"Good morning, Carmela," Aaron said with a warm, respectful smile. "The quarterly reports are in. The Romano Corporation has officially tripled its revenue since the restructuring."

"Thank you, Aaron," I said softly, taking the folder and setting it on the garden table.

I walked over to the stone pedestal sitting in the center of the private garden behind the house—a beautiful, minimalist marble sculpture of a mother dove holding a tiny olive branch in her beak, surrounded by blooming white roses.

At the base of the pedestal was a small silver plaque:

HENRY ROMANO

Forever Loved. Forever Free.

I laid the white lilies gently at the base of the marble stone.

I stood there for a long time, feeling the warm spring sunlight on my face, listening to the gentle breeze rustling through the green leaves of the oak trees above.

The ache in my heart had not vanished—it never would. The loss of my baby was a scar I would carry on my body and my soul for as long as I lived.

But the fear was gone.

The hesitation was gone.

The woman who had once sat by a telephone begging for a powerful man's attention had died in the snow on Archer Avenue.

In her place stood Carmela Romano—a woman who had reclaimed her father's empire, destroyed the enemies who dared to cross her line, and built a legacy that no man could ever threaten again.

I looked up at the bright blue Chicago sky, took a deep, clear breath of the fresh spring air, and turned back toward the house to lead my empire.
