Chapter 6 - The Noose Tightens

Vanessa did not make it past the Dallas-Fort Worth airport terminal.

She had booked a one-way ticket to Zurich under her maiden name, using a private credit card she believed was entirely disconnected from the Vale network. She walked briskly through the international departures lounge, her heart pounding against her ribs, clutching her Hermès Birkin bag containing three hundred thousand dollars in unmounted diamonds.

As she approached the boarding gate for the morning flight to Frankfurt, two men in tailored navy suits stepped into her path.

"Miss Vanessa Sterling?" the taller one asked, displaying a gold federal badge nestled in a leather wallet. "Special Agent Reynolds, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division."

Vanessa stopped dead. She tried to smile, to summon the flirtatious, helpless charm that had worked on powerful men her entire life. "Officers... is there a problem? I'm just traveling to Europe for a holiday."

"Your passport has been revoked by the State Department as of thirty minutes ago, Miss Sterling," Reynolds said evenly. "We also have a federal arrest warrant issued by the Southern District of New York."

"On what charges?!" she gasped, backing up into the row of airport seats. Passengers began turning, whispering, filming with their smartphones. "I’m a civilian! I haven't done anything!"

"Conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and aiding and abetting the evasion of international trade sanctions," Reynolds recited from memory, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Furthermore, the State of Texas has issued a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit torture."

"Torture?!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing through the terminal. "I didn't touch her! Adrian hit her! Adrian held the crop! I was just sitting on the couch!"

"We have sixteen hours of high-definition audio and video recovered from the residence, Miss Sterling," Reynolds replied, clicking the cuffs around her wrists with a sharp, metallic snap. "You directed the strikes. You corrected his count. In the eyes of the law, that makes you an active principal in the commission of a felony."

As they led her away through the terminal, her diamond-encrusted heels dragging against the linoleum, a private photographer standing near the departure board snapped twenty high-resolution frames of her arrest.

Within forty-five minutes, those images were displayed on the front page of every financial paper and gossip blog in the country. The headline in the *Wall Street Journal* was simple, brutal, and definitive:

**FALL OF VALE CAPITAL: CEO INVESTIGATED FOR TREASON AND TORTURE; MISTRESS ARRESTED AT DFW.**

Across the Atlantic, in a private clinic overlooking Lake Geneva, I watched the live broadcast from my bed.

The surgeon had finished the first round of restorative procedures. The pain had subsided to a dull, manageable ache, thanks to the state-of-the-art tissue regeneration therapies Arthur had flown in from Berlin.

My father sat in an armchair by the window, peeling an apple with a small silver knife. He didn't look at the television screen. He looked at me.

"Is it enough?" he asked quietly.

I turned my head from the screen. "Not yet."

May you like

Arthur smiled faintly, a cold, proud glint in his pale eyes. "Good. A Vance does not stop when the enemy falls. A Vance stops when the ground is salted."
