Chapter 3 - The Cold Extraction

A female paramedic wearing tactical EMT fatigues knelt beside me, her hands swift and clinical. "Ma'am, I need to administer a local anesthetic to prevent shock before we move you. Can you hear me clearly?"
"I hear you," I whispered.
The needle prick in my arm was nothing compared to the fiery agony across my back. Within moments, a cooling numbness began to spread through my torso, dulling the razor-sharp edges of the trauma. Two more medics rolled a specialized trauma stretcher into the room, lifting me with rhythmic, practiced care so that my back remained untouched by the canvas.
As they lifted me, the diamond pendant hanging from my throat swung forward. I reached up with trembling, bloody fingers, unhooked the platinum clasp, and held it out to my father.
Arthur took the pendant, pressing a small release on the back of the setting. The center diamond detached, revealing an ultra-dense, military-grade micro-SD card embedded within the platinum casing.
"Is everything on here?" Arthur asked softly.
"Everything," I said, coughing slightly as a sharp ache flared in my ribs. "Every transaction since the day he brought her into our home. The kickbacks from the shipping docks. The shell corporations registered in the Caymans under Vanessa’s mother’s maiden name. The altered safety logs for the logistics fleet. And the audio... all two hundred lashes."
Adrian, struggling against the boot pressing his head into the floor, raised his voice in a wild, frantic wail. "You spied on me?! In my own house?! That evidence is inadmissible! You obtained it without my consent! Any judge in Texas will throw it out!"
Arthur tucked the chip into his vest pocket, buttoned it, and smoothed his lapels.
"You still believe this will end in a Texas courtroom, Adrian?" Arthur said, looking down at him with genuine pity. "You truly do not understand the mechanics of the world you inhabit. You believe laws protect men like you. You forget that laws are written by men like me."
Arthur turned to the lead operative, a man whose helmet display glowed with cold green data streams. "Wipe the residential servers. Strip the hard drives from the basement control room. If it holds a byte of data, take it. Leave the building intact, but hollow."
"Understood, Director," the operative replied.
"Wait! No! My hard drives contain client portfolios!" Adrian screamed, thrashing wildly. "There are fifty million dollars in municipal bonds on those drives! You can't just take them!"
"They belong to Vance Sovereign Capital now," Arthur replied smoothly. "As does your firm's commercial lease. As does the title to this estate. As does the car you drove home tonight."
Vanessa crawled out from behind the sofa, her mascara running down her cheeks in black, grotesque tracks. She reached toward Arthur’s polished shoes, begging. "Sir... please... I didn't know! Adrian told me she was crazy! He told me she was trying to poison him! He forced me to watch! I had nothing to do with this!"
Arthur looked down at her outstretched, diamond-encrusted hands. He did not step back; he simply looked at her until she shrank away in terror.
"Miss Sterling," Arthur said evenly. "You spent four hundred thousand dollars of my family’s diverted revenue on a chalet in Aspen last Tuesday. You picked out the leather crop he used tonight from a tack shop in Highland Park yesterday afternoon. We have the receipt, the security footage, and the text message where you told him to 'make her bleed until she signs.'"
Vanessa froze. Her jaw hung slack, her eyes wide with animal horror.
"Take my daughter to the aircraft," Arthur commanded, turning his back on them both. "The surgeon is waiting at the facility in Zurich."
"Zurich?" Adrian shouted, his voice cracking into a broken sob. "You can't take her out of the country! She's my wife!"
Arthur paused at the shattered threshold of the doorway, the midnight wind whipping his overcoat around his legs.

"By dawn, Mr. Vale, you will find it difficult to prove she ever existed at all. And by noon, you will wish you had never been born."
