Chapter 6 - The Web of Deceit

The revelation about Ryan’s past sent shockwaves through my understanding of our entire relationship. Every memory—our wedding day, buying our house, celebrating promotions—was now tainted by the realization that I had married a man capable of profound, sociopathic deceit.
Diane didn't waste a single minute. She called her personal estate attorney, Arthur Vance, who arrived at our house by noon. While Ryan locked himself in his upstairs office, furiously making phone calls, Arthur, Diane, and I sat around the dining room table to map out the financial reality of what Ryan had been doing.
"It's worse than a simple affair, Hannah," Arthur explained, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the digital trail Kayla had provided alongside our joint bank records. "Ryan hasn't just been moving money for a separation. He’s been systematically siphoning assets into an offshore shell entity registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Apex Horizons LLC."
"Why?" I asked, holding a ice pack to my swollen ankles. "Why build a shell company?"
"Because," Arthur said, pointing to a column of figures, "he was planning to declare personal bankruptcy for his domestic consulting firm right around your due date. He was going to claim complete financial insolvency during the divorce proceedings, leaving you saddled with the joint mortgage and medical debt while he quietly drew funds from the offshore entity."
The cruelty was breathtaking. He didn't just want to leave me for Kayla; he wanted to financially cripple me so severely that I would be forced to surrender primary custody of Ella out of sheer inability to support her.
"He won't get away with it," Diane said, her voice shaking with rage. "Arthur, initiate an immediate freeze on all trust distributions tied to my husband's estate. Cut Ryan off entirely from the family holdings."
"I can do that by four o'clock today, Diane," Arthur replied. "Furthermore, because Ryan forged your signature on the Door County property valuation, we have grounds to file criminal fraud charges if he doesn't cooperate fully with a total, uncontested divorce settlement in Hannah's favor."
Just then, my phone chimed with a news alert from a local business blog. I looked down at the notification and felt my breath catch.

I looked up at Diane and Arthur. "Ryan didn't just steal from us and his family, did he?"
Arthur checked his tablet, a grim smile touching his lips. "It appears his company’s forensic accountants just caught up with his expense reports."
