Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Ryan turned slowly toward his mother, a look of genuine disbelief crossing his face. "Mom? What are you doing here? This is between Hannah and me."
"It ceased being between just the two of you the moment you attempted to use your father's estate as collateral for your personal offshore accounts," Diane said, stepping into the kitchen and laying the heavy leather briefcase on the counter.
Ryan’s face drained of color. "I didn't touch Dad's estate."
"Do not lie to me in this house," Diane snapped, slamming her hand onto the briefcase. "I spoke with our family accountant at seven this morning. You forged my signature on a preliminary valuation request for the Door County property three weeks ago. You tried to leverage the land my husband built with his own hands to secure a commercial line of credit for your fake holding company."
I looked between Diane and Ryan, pieces of a much larger puzzle suddenly falling into place. "The holding company... that wasn't for consulting?"
"No," Diane said, looking at me with eyes full of sorrow. "Ryan didn't just start lying when he met Kayla, Hannah. This goes back much further. Six years ago, right before you two got married, Ryan's father died. What Ryan never told you was how his father died, or what he discovered right before his heart gave out."
"Mom, shut up!" Ryan raised his voice, stepping toward her, his fists clenched at his sides. "You don't need to drag that up!"
"Sit down, Ryan!" Diane’s voice carried an authority so commandingly absolute that Ryan stopped dead in his tracks.
Diane turned back to me, her hands trembling slightly as she opened the briefcase. "My husband Richard didn't die of a simple heart attack, Hannah. He had a massive coronary stress event after discovering that Ryan—who was twenty-four at the time—had stolen sixty thousand dollars from the family manufacturing business to cover bad trading debts. Richard covered it up to save Ryan from prison. He took the secret to his grave, and I let Ryan believe he had gotten away with it because I was afraid of losing my only son."
Tears spilled down Diane's cheeks, but her voice remained firm. "I spent six years watching him pretend to be a changed man. I thought marrying you, building a home, and preparing for a baby had saved him. But yesterday, when I saw him holding Kayla in my kitchen, using the exact same tone of voice he used when he lied to his father... I realized I hadn't saved him at all. I had enabled a monster."

Ryan stood frozen, his jaw tight, looking like a trapped animal. "You're going to destroy your own son for her?"
"No," Diane said, pulling a stack of legal documents from the briefcase. "You destroyed yourself. I am simply protecting my granddaughter and the woman who actually deserves the Mitchell name."
