Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 8:45 AM, the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Sterling & Croft tower was filled with the smell of expensive roast coffee and quiet anxiety.

Arthur Sterling, the seventy-year-old founding partner, sat at the head of the long glass table, flanked by four senior directors and two corporate defense attorneys. They were staring at a single empty chair at the end of the room—the chair reserved for Daniel Holloway.

The heavy frosted-glass doors swung open.

The directors looked up, expecting Daniel.

Instead, I walked in. Marcus Sterling walked directly behind me, carrying two leather binders.

"Mrs. Holloway?" Arthur Sterling said, rising halfway out of his chair. "We... we were expecting your husband. He isn't answering his telephone."

"My husband is currently at the County Central Booking facility retaining a criminal defense attorney," I said, taking Daniel's empty seat at the head of the table. I placed my briefcase flat on the glass. "And you won't be needing him today. You’ll be dealing with me."

One of the corporate attorneys scoffed. "Mrs. Holloway, with all due respect, this is an internal partnership meeting regarding financial governance. Spouses have no standing—"

"I don't sit here as Daniel’s spouse, Counselor," I cut in, snapping open my briefcase. I slid a notarized document across the table directly to Arthur Sterling. "I sit here as the primary beneficiary of the Eleanor Vance Trust, which owns twenty-two percent of the voting shares of this firm. Which makes me your third-largest institutional shareholder."

Arthur’s eyes widened as he scanned the signature lines.

"Now," I continued, signaling Marcus to open his binders. "Let’s discuss the four point two million dollars that was embezzled from your client escrow funds via Aegis Consulting."

For the next twenty minutes, the room was so quiet that the only sound was the rustle of forensic audit pages. I laid out the wire transfers, the counterfeit invoices, the matching routing numbers from Daniel’s personal accounts, and the text logs between Daniel and Vanessa coordinating the theft.

"By noon today," I stated, closing the binder with a sharp slap, "the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division will execute a search warrant on Daniel’s office down the hall. If Sterling & Croft cooperates fully, turns over his server access, and fires him for gross moral turpitude within the hour, I will recommend that the prosecution treat the firm as an unindicted victim rather than a co-conspirator."

Arthur Sterling looked up, his face gray with shock. He didn't hesitate.

"Call security," Arthur told his legal counsel. "Wipe Daniel Holloway’s access codes. Seal his office. And prepare the termination papers immediately."
