Chapter 6 - Blood in the Water

By dawn, the world had fundamentally shifted.

I sat in the penthouse suite of the Grand Aurelia Hotel, high above the city skyline. A private physician had properly dressed my wounds, prescribing antibiotics and mild painkillers. Dressed in a cream cashmere sweater and loose silk trousers, I held a cup of Earl Grey tea, watching the early morning financial news on the eighty-inch screen mounted against the slate wall.

The headline banner scrolling across CNBC was an unmitigated bloodbath:

*VALE ENTERPRISES (NASDAQ: VALE) PLUMMETS 84% AT OPENING BELL FOLLOWING CEO ARREST AND DEBT DEFAULT.*

The anchor’s voice was breathless with sensational excitement:

*“...unprecedented collapse of the mid-cap darling Vale Enterprises overnight. Reports indicate founder and CEO Adrian Vale was taken into custody late last night on charges of felony domestic assault and aggravated battery. Simultaneously, the mysterious withdrawal of primary credit facilities by Sovereign Crest Capital has triggered a cross-default clause across all commercial paper issued by the firm. Industry insiders are calling it an orchestrated decapitation...”*

A soft knock sounded at the double doors of the penthouse.

Julian Thorne stepped inside, holding a hot cup of black coffee and a fresh stack of legal binders. “Good morning, Miss Sterling. How is your back feeling?”

“Tolerable,” I said, taking a sip of tea. “Has my father landed?”

“His Gulfstream touched down at Teterboro twenty minutes ago. His motorcade will be here within the hour. In the meantime, I have executed the asset liquidation protocols as instructed.”

Julian set the binders on the glass table.

“Adrian spent the night in central booking. His request for bail was denied without prejudice pending a psychiatric evaluation and the formal presentation of your medical reports. Miss Jenkins was also detained at the airport attempting to board a flight to Saint Martin with two hundred and eighty thousand dollars in undeclared bearer bonds. She is currently being held at the municipal women’s correctional facility on flight risk protocols.”

A cold sense of satisfaction settled in my chest, but there was no joy in it. Only the clean, sterile closure of a surgical incision.

“What about the company?” I asked.

“Vale Enterprises is functionally dead,” Julian replied smoothly. “The board dissolved the executive committee at 6:00 AM. They have agreed to an emergency pre-packaged Chapter 11 reorganization. Sterling Capital will acquire all intellectual property, client databases, and software patents for ten cents on the dollar, wiping out all existing equity holders. Adrian’s personal net worth has dropped from an estimated eighty-five million dollars to negative forty-two million dollars in liabilities.”

“And the personal guarantees?”

“Every single one has been called,” Julian said, a grim smile touching his lips. “The bank has already initiated foreclosure proceedings on his private sports cars, his family’s summer home in Martha’s Vineyard, and his personal art collection. By this afternoon, Adrian Vale will not possess enough liquid capital to buy a cup of coffee from a vending machine.”

I looked out the panoramic window at the sun breaking over the city’s skyscrapers. For three years, I had shrunk myself to fit inside Adrian’s fragile ego. I had walked softly, dressed modestly, and swallowed his patronizing lectures about business, power, and how the world truly functioned.

He had thought I was a mouse living in his castle.

He was about to learn what happened when the mouse owned the foundation beneath the stone.
