Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Door

Vanessa rushed to the window, parting the drapes with trembling fingers. “Adrian... there are armed men at the gates. They just disabled our private security guards! Who are they? Call the police! Adrian!”
Adrian didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at his phone, which was now flashing with an emergency broadcast from Bloomberg Terminal:
*BREAKING: Sterling Capital calls in $120M accelerated debt facility against Vale Enterprises. Trading halted amid liquidity insolvency.*
“You destroyed the debt covenant,” Adrian whispered, his eyes wide with horror. “That loan was amortized over ten years. You can’t call it in overnight!”
“Read subsection twelve of the master security agreement you signed on our wedding night,” I answered, leaning against the marble console table for support, my back screaming in agony but my posture immaculate. “In the event of moral turpitude, domestic abuse, or material bad faith by the debtor, the lender reserves the right to demand immediate, full settlement within sixty minutes. If unsatisfied, all pledged collateral—which includes ninety-two percent of your company shares, this mansion, your fleet of vehicles, and your personal investment accounts—transfers automatically to the Sterling Family Trust.”
“You trapped me!” he screamed, his polished veneer shattering into ugly, desperate rage. “You laid a trap for me from the very day we got married!”
“I built you a fortress, Adrian!” I roared back, my voice cutting through his panic like a whip. “I gave you every opportunity to be an honorable man! I asked for nothing but loyalty, respect, and a genuine partnership. But the moment you tasted power that you didn't earn, you invited a serpent into our home, humiliated me in front of your peers, and tonight, you took a whip to my back!”
Vanessa turned from the window, her face contorted in frantic defense. “Adrian, don’t listen to her! She’s bluffing! Even if her father is rich, the courts will protect you! You have contracts! I have your baby inside me—they can’t throw a pregnant woman onto the street!”
Before Adrian could answer, the heavy double doors of the mansion were pushed open.
Four men in bespoke charcoal suits stepped inside, followed by a tall, silver-haired man carrying a leather briefcase. Behind them were two female paramedics in pristine uniforms carrying trauma kits.
The silver-haired man was Julian Thorne, senior partner at Thorne, Sterling & Vance, and my father’s most feared corporate assassin for the last thirty years.
“Good evening, Mrs. Vale,” Julian said, ignoring Adrian completely as he bowed his head with profound deference. “Your father sends his love. He is currently aboard his jet, en route from Zurich. He has instructed me to handle the preliminary liquidation and ensure your immediate medical care.”
“Julian,” I breathed, the tension in my chest loosening just enough for a single tear of exhaustion to escape. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”
Adrian tried to step forward, puffing his chest out in a pathetic display of authority. “Thorne! You are trespassing on private property! I am Adrian Vale, CEO of—”
Julian didn't even blink. He withdrew a certified document from his case and held it out with two fingers.

“As of twelve minutes ago, Mr. Vale, you are no longer the CEO of Vale Enterprises. The board of directors held an emergency virtual quorum under Section 4 of your corporate charter; the Sterling proxy voted seventy-two percent of the common stock to terminate your employment with immediate cause. Furthermore, this property is registered under the Valhalla Living LLC, an entity wholly owned by Miss Sterling. You have precisely twenty minutes to vacate the premises before the county sheriff arrives to arrest you for criminal trespass and aggravated felony assault.”
