Chapter 7 - The Empire Burns

Alexander Hayes returned to the penthouse at 11:15 PM, his tie torn off, his shirt soaked with cold sweat.

"Emily!" he called out, his voice echoing frantically through the vaulted foyer. "Emily, please, let’s talk! I threw Olivia out! I told Madison she is dead to me! Emily!"

No answer came.

The penthouse was suffocatingly quiet.

Panic, cold and sharp as an assassin's blade, pierced Alexander’s chest. He ran down the long corridor, his heavy boots pounding against the hardwood floors.

"Emily!"

He threw open the master bedroom door.

The room was pristine. The bed was made.

Alexander’s eyes fell upon the nightstand.

The small white porcelain urn was gone.

His gaze snapped to the dresser. Grace’s stuffed rabbit was gone.

He sprinted to the walk-in closet, tearing open the double doors. Emily’s casual clothes were missing. The nursery closet was empty. Grace’s shoes, her drawings from the refrigerator, her tiny hair ribbons—everything that proved my daughter had existed in this home had been erased.

Alexander turned back toward the bed, his breath catching in his throat.

There, resting in the exact center of his silk pillow, was Emily’s simple platinum wedding band.

Beside it lay the divorce papers.

Alexander dropped to his knees, his hands trembling violently as he picked up the paper. His eyes scanned the cold, legal terms: *Irreconcilable differences... complete renunciation of marital assets... full dissolution of marriage.*

"No..." Alexander choked, clutching the paper to his chest. "No, no, no! Emily! You can't leave me!"

He scrambled for his phone, his fingers slick with sweat as he dialed his chief head of security, Marco.

"Find her!" Alexander roared into the receiver, his voice cracking into a ragged, terrifying shriek. "Shut down the ports! Shut down O'Hare! Shut down Midway! Put every man on the street! Bring my wife back!"

"Boss?" Marco’s confused voice responded. "What happened?"

"Emily is gone! Find her, or I will burn this city to the ground!"

For twenty minutes, the entire underworld of Chicago mobilized. Hundreds of armed men flooded the highways, checkpoints were erected at private airstrips, and traffic cameras across the state were tapped by Hayes-controlled hackers.

Alexander stood in the center of Grace’s empty nursery, gripping his phone so hard the glass cracked beneath his palm. He paced the floor like a caged, wounded beast, his chest heaving, his eyes bloodshot and wild.

The phone rang.

Alexander answered on the first ring. "Did you stop her?!"

"Boss..." Marco’s voice was dead, trembling with fear. "We tracked her. A Bennett Logistics private jet departed Midway forty minutes ago."

Alexander’s heart seized. "Where did it land? Turn the plane around! Threaten the control tower! Do whatever you have to do!"

"Boss, it’s outside our airspace," Marco whispered. "The flight was authorized under international diplomatic cargo clearance. It just crossed the border."

"Where is she, Marco?!" Alexander screamed, tears streaming down his face. "Where is my wife?!"

"Toronto, Canada, Boss. She landed in Toronto ten minutes ago."

The phone slipped from Alexander’s hand, crashing against the hardwood floor of his daughter’s nursery.

The silence that followed was absolute.

Alexander looked around the empty room—at the bare walls, the empty crib, the phantom scent of baby powder and lilacs that was rapidly fading into nothingness.

Emily hadn't threatened him. She hadn't screamed at him. She hadn't demanded retribution.

She had simply cut him out of her existence, taking their dead child with her, leaving him alone in an empire built on blood, surrounded by sycophants, holding a cold platinum ring that smelled of nothing at all.

Alexander Hayes collapsed against the wall of the nursery, buried his face in his hands, and howled into the empty night.
