Chapter 15 - Subpoena at Dawn

At six o'clock the following morning, the Mercer estate was surrounded.

This time, it wasn't reporters. Four unmarked black SUVs were parked across the circular driveway, their flashing blue-and-red grill lights reflecting off the snowdrifts. Six federal agents in dark trench coats, accompanied by two armed U.S. Marshals, stood on the front portico.

David Mercer opened the door himself. He had not slept. He was wearing an old flannel shirt and trousers, his hair uncombed, looking twenty years older than the polished billionaire who had raised a champagne toast forty-eight hours earlier.

"David Mercer?" the lead agent asked, producing a gold badge and a thick legal packet. "I’m Special Agent Harris, Department of Justice, Public Corruption and Infrastructure Safety Division. We have a federal warrant for the seizure of all electronic records, financial ledgers, and architectural blueprints on these premises."

David didn't resist. He simply stepped aside. "Julian is in the guest wing. He has counsel on standby."

"This warrant isn't for Julian Mercer, Mr. Mercer," Agent Harris replied coldly as his team filed past into the foyer. "Julian Mercer was arrested at the Denver airport two hours ago trying to board a private flight to the Cayman Islands."

David closed his eyes, leaning heavily against the doorframe. "Then what are you here for?"

"We are here for the Katherine Mercer Memorial Trust archives," Agent Harris said, pulling a secondary document from his leather folio. "And we are acting on an emergency disclosure filed at dawn by the majority shareholder of Mercer Infrastructure."

David snapped his head up, his eyes wide with shock. "Majority shareholder? That's impossible. I own sixty percent of the voting equity!"

"Not according to the original 2004 trust filing authenticated this morning by the federal probate court," Harris said, handing him the top sheet.

David looked at the document. There, typed in crisp black ink, was Katherine’s unmistakable signature, witnessed by Marcus Vance. Beneath it was a newly stamped federal order of corporate accession, signed by the Chief Judge of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.

And at the bottom, listed as the sole surviving trustee and executive chairman of Mercer Infrastructure, was a single name:

*Captain Leah Katherine Mercer, U.S. Army.*

"She... she took the company," David whispered, the paper trembling in his fingers.

"Captain Mercer has placed the entire corporation into voluntary federal receivership," Agent Harris informed him without emotion. "All executive compensation packages have been halted. All private accounts tied to corporate revenue are frozen. And, Mr. Mercer, you are formally subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury on Friday morning to answer charges of criminal conspiracy and corporate fraud regarding the 2019 safety overrides."

Behind them, the front door of the guest wing flew open. Celeste emerged, dragging two heavy Louis Vuitton suitcases, screaming at an agent who was blocking her path to the garage.

"You can't touch my car! That Mercedes is registered in my name!"

"Every asset registered to this address is under federal seizure, ma'am," the agent replied evenly. "Step away from the vehicle."

David stood motionless in the grand hallway, watching the life he had built on betrayal, vanity, and lies dismantle itself piece by piece, while the cold mountain air rushed into the house through the wide-open door.
