Chapter 9 - The Collapse of the Patriarch

The silence in the dining room was absolute, broken only by the erratic, shallow breathing of Robert Sterling. His face had turned a deep, mottled crimson, veins bulging along his temples like twisted cords.

"You ungrateful little bitch," Robert hissed, dropping all pretense of paternal dignity. The mask had slipped entirely, revealing the snarling, cornered beast beneath. "I made you! I paid for your childhood, I paid for your clothes, I gave you the talent you used to build that fancy little firm out west! You owe me everything! Without me, you are nothing!"

"Robert, please! Stop talking!" Eleanor cried out, rushing forward to grab his sleeve, but he violently shook her off.

"I built Vanguard!" Robert shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I did what any real head of a family does! I protected our empire! The Horizon developers screwed us! What was I supposed to do? Go bankrupt? Let the banks take this house? Let the community laugh at us? You were my daughter—your assets were *my* assets!"

"Your assets?" Julia took a step toward him, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying, controlled power that made Robert take a step back. "You didn't protect an empire, Robert. You operated an elaborate embezzlement scheme using your daughter as a legal shield. You destroyed my relationship with my family. You made me spend seven years believing I was worthless, all to protect your fragile, bloated ego."

"Greg," Robert turned frantically toward his brother-in-law, his hands grasping at empty air. "Greg, call our lawyer. Call Harrison. Tell him she’s trespassing! Tell him she stole corporate documents!"

Uncle Greg stared down at the open binder before him. His fingers slowly turned a page showing a check voucher where fifty thousand dollars from Julia’s student grant had been transferred into Vanguard’s general account the exact week Greg’s subcontracting firm was demanding payment on an overdue invoice.

"My God, Robert," Greg muttered, his face pale with sickened realization. "This... this is my invoice number. You told me the state infrastructure board approved an emergency grant to pay off my crew. You paid me with your daughter's scholarship money?"

"It was cash flow management!" Robert screamed, sweat glistening along his hairline. "It was business!"

"It was grand larceny," Marcus Vance said quietly, standing up from the table and wiping his mouth with a napkin. "And if this audit is already with the Attorney General, Vanguard is dead. Robert, don't ever contact my office again."

Marcus walked out of the dining room without looking back. One by one, the other guests stood up, their eyes averted, muttering excuses, stepping carefully around the legal documents scattered across the floor, and heading for the front door.

Within three minutes, the grand dining room was empty, save for Robert, Eleanor, Monica, and Julia. The great patriarch stood amid the remnants of his anniversary feast, looking small, withered, and thoroughly defeated, his tailored jacket hanging awkwardly on his trembling frame.
