Chapter 8 - The Ledger on the Dinner Table

Julia didn't blink. She stepped forward into the hall, her leather boots clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble, forcing Eleanor to retreat several steps until her back hit the foyer credenza.
"Good evening, Robert," Julia said, her voice clear, bell-like, and carrying effortlessly into the dining room where eight guests sat frozen around the banquet table. "I apologize for interrupting your anniversary dinner. But since Monica brought me some fascinating Vanguard financial documents yesterday in Portland, I figured it was best to handle the audit in person."
Uncle Greg, a burly man with ruddy cheeks, stood up from the dining table, napkins in hand. "Now hold on just a second. Julia, you don't have the right to come in here and make a scene after what you pulled seven years ago. Robert saved your neck from criminal charges!"
"Is that what he told you, Uncle Greg?" Julia asked, turning her gaze toward him. "Did he tell you he saved me?"
Robert took two aggressive strides toward Julia, his chest swelling, his index finger thrusting toward the front door. "Get out of my house, Julia. Right now. You are not welcome under this roof. You forfeited your place in this family when you stole from my firm!"
"Dad, stop it!" Monica screamed, her voice cracking through the tension like a whip. She stepped directly between Robert and Julia, her body shaking with pure, unadulterated rage. "Stop lying! Stop telling this pathetic, disgusting lie! I know everything! Mom told me on speakerphone yesterday!"
Robert froze, his arm remaining outstretched in mid-air. He cut a furious, venomous glance at Eleanor. "What did you say to her?"
"She didn't have to say much, Dad," Monica spat, tears of fury streaking her face. "Just enough to confirm that Julia never stole fifteen thousand dollars. Just enough to confirm that you framed your own daughter at Lorenzo’s so you could steal her design prize, forge her signature, and load three hundred thousand dollars of commercial debt onto her credit lines to buy my condo!"
A collective gasp rippled through the dining room. Marcus Vance, the engineering contractor, slowly put down his fork, his eyes darting anxiously between Robert and the sisters.
Julia walked calmly past Robert, unlatched her titanium briefcase, and emptied its contents directly onto the center of the mahogany dining table. Thick, glossy binders, bank statement transcripts, and notarized handwriting analyses tumbled across the floral centerpiece, knocking over a crystal gravy boat and spilling across Uncle Greg’s gold-rimmed china plate.

"Here is the paper trail, gentlemen," Julia announced, addressing the entire room. "Exhibit A: the 2012 LLC amendment where Robert Sterling assigned my student intellectual property as commercial collateral. Exhibit B: the forged loan authorizations from 2018, bearing the signature of a notary who has already signed an affidavit confessing that Robert paid him two thousand dollars to notarize documents in my absence. And Exhibit C: the electronic wire transfers routing funds from Vanguard Design Group directly into Robert’s personal accounts to pay for his club memberships and Monica’s real estate."
Julia looked Robert dead in the eye. "Every single piece of paper here has already been mirrored on the cloud servers of Vance & Sterling Partners. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office received a duplicate packet at four o'clock this afternoon."
