Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital.

The morning air was crisp and clear as the nurse rolled my wheelchair out to the private underground parking garage. In my arms, Clara was swaddled in a soft pink blanket, sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the storm that had raged around her since the moment she entered the world.

Waiting beside a pristine black SUV was Arthur Vance, along with a middle-aged woman named Maria, whom Arthur had hired as a private nurse and assistant for my first few months of recovery.

"Everything is prepared, Charlotte," Arthur said, opening the door for me. "The townhome in West Village is fully furnished, secured, and ready for you and Clara."

"The townhome?" I asked, looking at him in surprise. "I thought we were renting a small apartment near the park."

"The West Village townhome was one of your father-in-law's personal properties," Arthur explained with a gentle smile as he helped me transfer into the passenger seat. "It was never incorporated into Sterling Enterprises. Julian purchased it thirty years ago and left it in a separate, quiet trust specifically intended for his family's long-term residence. It belongs entirely to you and Clara now."

As the vehicle glided smoothly through the streets of Manhattan, I looked out the window at the passing city. Just a week ago, I had walked these same streets feeling entirely invisible, carrying the terrifying weight of an uncertain future, constantly checking my banking app to see if I had enough money for groceries.

Now, the city looked different. It no longer felt cold and hostile; it felt open, filled with possibilities.

When we arrived at the townhome, I was greeted by a charming, four-story red brick house with a private garden in the back. Inside, the rooms were filled with warm sunlight, hardwood floors, and comfortable, tasteful furniture. Fresh flowers had been placed on the kitchen counter, alongside a basket of baby supplies, organic groceries, and a personal note from the nursing agency.

Arthur set my bags down in the foyer and turned to face me.

"The board of Sterling Enterprises held their formal reorganization meeting this morning," he said, pulling a thin set of documents from his coat pocket. "An interim CEO—a highly respected former executive from Hines Property Group—has been appointed. The market has reacted very favorably to the news. Stock prices have already rebounded by twelve percent."

"And Richard?" I asked quietly, placing Clara in her portable crib in the living room.

"Richard signed all necessary transfer documents yesterday afternoon," Arthur replied. "The Cayman funds—approximately sixty-two million dollars—have been successfully clawed back into the trust accounts. He has vacated his penthouse. According to our sources, he is currently staying at a budget hotel near Newark Airport, preparing to move to a small town in Ohio where his college roommate operates a minor logistics company."

"And Jessica?"

"Miss Miller has returned to her family's estate in Connecticut," Arthur said with a dry smile. "Her father was forced to pay a substantial penalty to break the St. Regis wedding contract. It is safe to say her social standing in Manhattan is severely compromised."

I sat down on the plush sofa, letting out a long, deep breath that I felt like I had been holding for months.

"What happens now, Arthur?"

"Now, Charlotte," Arthur said softly, resting his hand gently on my shoulder, "you rest. You heal. You raise your daughter. The trust will provide a generous monthly stipend for your living expenses, and I will handle all corporate governance matters, consulting you only when major decisions require your trustee signature."

He walked toward the front door, stopping just before he reached the handle. He turned back to look at me, his old eyes filled with profound respect.

"Julian would have been very proud of you, Charlotte," Arthur said softly. "He always said you had more backbone than anyone else in that family. He was right."
