Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master

My phone rang at two that afternoon while I was still in Sandra’s conference room. The caller ID flashed *Joselyn*.

I took a deep breath, signaling Sandra and Martin to remain quiet. I tapped the speaker icon.

"Hello, Joselyn."

"Mom?" Her voice sounded breathy, tight with an irritation she had never bothered to conceal over the past six months. "Why did Ridgeline Barn just call Derek and tell him the wedding reservation has been cancelled? Did you have something to do with this?"

No greeting. No inquiry into my well-being. No mention of the brutal text message she had sent me twenty-four hours earlier excommunicating me from her life.

"Ridgeline Barn cancelled the reservation because the contract holder instructed them to do so," I said smoothly. "I paid the deposit, Joselyn. Since I am not invited to the wedding, it made little sense for me to host a party for two hundred strangers."

A sharp intake of breath hissed through the receiver. "Are you serious? You're punishing me? You are literally sabotaging the most important day of my life because you can't handle Derek setting healthy boundaries!"

"Healthy boundaries?" I repeated, marveling at the therapeutic vocabulary Derek had clearly drilled into her head. "Excluding the mother who raised you, who funded your life, who paid for that very barn—that is not a boundary, Joselyn. That is cruelty."

"Derek was right about you!" Joselyn yelled, her voice vibrating with tears of sheer frustration. "He told me you would use money to control me. He told me you'd hold every penny over our heads like a weapon! He said you were a classic narcissist who couldn't bear to see me happy with a man you can't manipulate!"

"Joselyn, listen to me very carefully," I said, keeping my cadence measured. "Where is Derek right now?"

"He's running errands for the rehearsal! Not that you care! Mom, Ridgeline Barn needs that reservation reinstated by five o'clock or our date goes to another couple. Derek is completely stressed out because of you! Do you have any idea what this is doing to his health?"

"Where is his office, Joselyn?"

"Why? So you can go down there and harass him? He doesn't want to see you! If you don't call Paula right now and reinstate that booking, I swear to God, Mom, you will never see me again. You will never see your future grandchildren. You will die alone in that giant house."

The words hit me like a physical blow. A dull thud inside my chest. Robert’s eyes looked out at me from my memory, full of warmth, decency, and quiet fortitude. Robert had never spoken to a living soul with that kind of contempt.

"Joselyn," I said softly, "if you make a choice to walk out of my life, make sure your feet are firmly planted on the ground you stand on. Because starting right now, every single platform I built beneath you is gone."

"What does that mean?" she snapped.

"It means Derek has five days to find another venue. Goodbye, Joselyn."

I ended the call before she could scream again. My hand shook as I set the phone on the table.

"Are you okay, Frances?" Sandra asked, placing a warm hand on my shoulder.

"I'm awake," I answered, wiping a stray tear before it could touch my cheek. "Martin, can you freeze that secondary loan account at First National Horizon?"

"Not without an official fraud affidavit signed by you, accompanied by an emergency police report," Martin replied. "If we file that, the bank will freeze all assets associated with Vanguard Logistics, flag Derek's social security number, and notify the financial crimes unit."

"Then let's draft it," I said. "And call the District Attorney's office. I want an investigator assigned by tonight."
