Chapter 6 - Fragile Truces

We moved to the morning room, where Emily had set up a state-of-the-art portable ultrasound machine that Grant had purchased and delivered via courier the previous evening.

The room smelled of lemon oil, old wood, and the damp earth of the gardens outside. Rain had finally cleared, leaving pale golden sunlight slanting through the high windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

I lay back on the chaise lounge, pulling up my sweater to expose the soft, pale curve of my lower stomach.

Grant stood beside the chaise, stiff and unmoving, his hands clenched at his sides. He looked entirely out of his element—the titan of global shipping, terrified by an ultrasound probe.

"Relax, Mr. Hale," Emily said dryly, uncapping the conductive gel. "I don't bite, and neither does the machine. Take her hand. You're hovering like an attack helicopter."

Grant glanced at me, hesitant.

I extended my fingers toward him. Without a word, he closed his large hand around mine, his grip warm, protective, and trembling slightly.

Emily applied the cool gel to my skin. I flinched slightly at the temperature, and Grant’s fingers tightened instinctively around mine.

"Here we go," Emily murmured, pressing the transducer against my abdomen.

The screen flickered, shifting from snowy gray static into sharp, high-contrast black-and-white images. For several agonizing seconds, there was only the hum of the electronics and the sound of our breathing.

Then, Emily adjusted the angle.

Two distinct, perfectly formed gestational sacs appeared on the monitor. Inside each one, a tiny, miraculous silhouette floated in the dark fluid—fragile, impossibly small, yet undeniably human.

A sudden, rhythmic sound filled the room.

*Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump.*

It was rapid, fierce, and loud as a galloping horse.

"That's baby A," Emily smiled, pointing a gloved finger at the left side of the screen. "Heart rate is one-hundred and fifty-eight. Strong. Perfect."

She tilted the probe slightly to the right.

A second heartbeat echoed through the speakers, slightly out of sync with the first, creating an incredible, chaotic symphony of life inside the quiet morning room.

*Thump-thump-thump-thump.*

"And that is baby B. Heart rate one-hundred and sixty-two. Growth metrics are completely on track, Nora. Despite the nausea, your body has protected them flawlessly."

I began to cry. Quiet, overwhelming tears of relief spilled down my temples, soaking into the fabric of the lounge.

I looked up at Grant.

The billionaire was gone.

Grant was staring at the monitor, his lips parted, tears shimmering openly in his gray-blue eyes. A single tear escaped, tracking down his sharp jawline. He brought our joined hands up to his mouth, pressing his lips against my knuckles, kissing them over and over again with a reverence that shook me to the core.

"They're alive," he whispered, his voice cracking completely. "They're really there."

"They're very much there, Grant," Emily said gently, turning down the volume slightly. "Two little fighters. Just like their mother."

Grant dropped to one knee beside the lounge, just as he had in the hospital, but this time there was no anger in his posture. He leaned his forehead against our joined hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, release-valve sobs.

For thirteen weeks, I had carried the terrifying weight of this secret alone in the cold halls of Hawthorne House. But in that sunlit room, listening to the twin engines of our children's hearts beating against the silence, the isolation finally shattered.

I reached out with my free hand and buried my fingers in his thick, dark hair.

Grant looked up, his face wet with tears, his eyes filled with an unspoken plea for forgiveness.

"We can do this, Nora," he whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I will spend the rest of my life making this right. Just let me be their father. Just let me be your husband."

Looking down at him, feeling the steady warmth of his hand over mine, I realized that the cold war was over.

"You already are, Grant," I whispered. "You already are."
