Chapter 4 - The Manor Under Siege

Grant lowered the phone slowly, setting it on the bedside table with exaggerated care.
"I didn't authorize this," he said. The quietness of his voice was far more terrifying than any shout. "Julian has power of attorney over legacy trust protocols from my grandfather’s era. When rumors circulated in August that you had visited a private clinic in White Plains, Julian had corporate counsel draft this contingency to protect the trust's voting shares. He used my system credentials while I was in Singapore negotiating the Baltic shipping contracts."
I stared at him through my tears, desperately searching his face for deceit. "You expect me to believe you didn't know?"
"I expect you to know me better than that," Grant snarled, stepping close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his body. "Have I ever—in the two years we have been bound by this arrangement—taken something from you without your consent? Did I force you into my bed in July? Did I force you to marry me?"
"You bought my father's company!"
"I saved your father from federal prison!" Grant fired back, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Arthur Whitmore had falsified his safety certifications on the naval turbine contracts, Nora! If Hale Meridian hadn't stepped in, absorbed the liabilities, and covered the six-million-dollar penalty, your father would have died in a federal penitentiary instead of in his own bed! I married you because the board required a familial merger to justify the absorption of toxic debt to our institutional shareholders! I took the hit to protect Arthur!"
The room spun.
"What?" I whispered. My throat felt parched. "My father... falsified records?"
Grant looked at me, the anger draining from his eyes, leaving only a profound, devastating sadness. "He was desperate, Nora. He was drowning. He came to my father on his knees. My father refused him. But I... I saw you at the gala in May. I saw the way you looked at him, trying to carry the weight of an entire failing empire on your shoulders."
He closed his eyes for a second, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I went to my board the next morning. I told them we were acquiring Whitmore Systems. When they rebelled, I told them I was marrying the founder’s daughter to consolidate executive authority. I gave them no choice."
I sank back into the pillows, my mind reeling. My entire reality—the narrative I had built over two years of being a sacrificial lamb sold off to a cold, predatory billionaire—was dissolving into smoke.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I choked out.
"Because you loved him," Grant said simply. "Arthur Whitmore was your hero. Why would I destroy your memory of him to make myself look better in your eyes? You already hated me for being a Hale. Letting you think I was a ruthless corporate raider was easier than watching your heart break over your father’s fraud."
I stared at him, my vision blurred by fresh tears. The man standing before me was not the monster I had fought in my head for thirteen weeks. He was something far more complicated: a man who absorbed damage in silence, who locked his feelings behind impenetrable iron gates, and who believed that control was the only acceptable substitute for love.
"And now?" I asked, my voice barely audible. "What happens now?"
"Now," Grant said, his voice hardening into steel, "we go home. To Hawthorne House."
"You have a company to run in Manhattan."
"The company can burn," Grant said without a second's hesitation. "My chief operating officer can handle the day-to-day operations. My security team is already en route to upstate New York. By sunrise, Julian will be stripped of his corporate credentials and removed from the executive committee. And you, Eleanor, are going to be fed, hydrated, and protected."
"Grant—"
May you like
"I tore up the annulment, Nora," he said, stepping right up to the mattress, leaning down until his eyes were level with mine. "We are married. We remain married. And nobody—not Julian, not my board, and not your stubborn pride—is going to separate me from you or my children."
